I’ve read a number of horror stories about people opening up their new laptops, going online and immediately picking up a trojan or something equally as nasty. This has happened even if their first port of call has been to AVG to download their free Anti-Virus program. Is there a correct procedure for making sure this doesn’t happen? Apart from obviously not visiting questionable sites, what have the rest of you done to avoid contaminating your nice new netbook?
Download the AVG software first to USB drive and install before you connect to the t’internet

Do you mean to a different computer?
Whilst I concede that anti virus software is a must have these days I am not of the opinion that the internet is a cesspit waiting to infect your computer as soon as a connection is made.
Of course there are horror stories and as alway they are well publicised.
It is unsolicited junk emails that are my main threat, not the sites I visit
Get the Comodo Firewall from here –

When you install, install only the Firewall and nothing else. Untick the installtion of toolbar, etc.
I find AVG rather intrusive and heavy.
Try ClamWin Free AntiVirus – its light –

Yup, and if you touch your PC you’ll get STDs. Don’t be ********…
Mod. edit: Remark removed, keep a good tone please.
Yes if you do want to be extra cautious (although in my opinion it is not necessary) then download AVG on a different computer and save it onto a memory stick. Then put the memory stick into the NC10 and install AVG. Then you can connect to the internet knowing you already have virus protection.
