I know this question is going to depend a great deal on the speed of the chosen memory device, but is the built-in SD card reader’s read and write capabilities faster or slower than the USB ports? I know what the theoretical limit of USB 2.0 is, but I have no clue as to what card readers are capable of. I would like to keep some data and programs “portable” for use on different machines, and would like to buy a new SD card or flash drive.
Thanks,
–Ken

Having said that I guess you could carry a small SD card reader as well as the card itself.
My personal opinion would be to get a USB flash drive!

December 26, 2008 at 11:17 pm #177425AlfiharParticipantWell the inbuilt card reader shouldn’t be faster than the USB ports as it is a usb device connected via the universal serial bus, according to the output of the ‘lsusb’ command.
I’ve carried around a SD card reader and card instead of a memory stick for a while as I have several devices which take SD cards but have no usb. However a usb stick could be more useful as you can boot from it, which is especially useful for a laptop with no optical drive.

But for having portable apps I find a U3 flash drive the simplest. I carry Firefox, Open Office & WinRAR as well as loads of work files (and don’t forget a copy of Manic Miner).

[/quote1230507177]I would think it a no-brainer as well, but after reading a large number of articles, it seems that there is a great variation in the read and write speeds of flash drives. And, Sandisk’s plain Cruzers were near the back of the pack. I may spend a few extra dollars for a faster flash drive.
