I am thinking of returning mine, I only received it three days ago and the left hinge started to click. I managed to stop this by squeezing the left side together and it now works again as normal. I rang Samsung up and they said that the product has now been discontinued and that I should return it to the place of purchase if I am not satisfied.
Is this going to eventually break, has anyones still working like the day they bought it?

August 1, 2010 at 7:45 pm #205248jeepers01Participantaticarnage – It’s interesting that Samsung suggested returning it to the place of purchase rather than offering to fix it. Presumably this suggests that they do not have a remedy?
Probably best to take their advice but it’s a shame as it’s a nice machine, although there is one user fix detailed earlier in this thread if you have fallen in love with the now discontinued machine.
Hope this helps.

[/quote1280692741]It doesn’t fill you with confidence when that happens like you say, I really like the machine however it would seem that this is going to happen. At the moment I have 28 days to return from the supplier. It would be a killer if this happened down the line and it takes 5-6 weeks for Samsung to fix if they can and then for it to come back and do the same again.

My laptop hinges are knackered too.. I thought it must have been my fault somehow, but after reading all this it sounds like they were quite weak to start with. 🙁August 31, 2010 at 4:00 pm #205266hobomotelMember@wintrmute 104378 wrote:

Case opened up on the left side. I called Samsung on the 18th of August and they sent someone to pick it up the next day. 8 or 9 days later they returned the laptop fully repaired. Whats amazing is that they even upgraded my hard drive from 160GB to 500GB!!. I got this form telling me what they fixed and apperently the hard drive was broken or something. Strange as I never experienced any issues using it.
Got to say that their customer support has really improved!
September 1, 2010 at 3:44 pm #205326SEORGMemberHi all,
The left hinge on my N510 has failed but I am also having a problem with my webcam. Is there any way that these could be related?
September 3, 2010 at 9:34 am #205301externo6Memberpossible as the cable to the web cam goes through the left hinge, mine failed a week ago but epoxied it up and put mettle tubes in the plastic holes and screwed straight into them and its more stable than before 🙂
October 27, 2010 at 2:46 pm #205350SammySupportTechMemberThe N510 has a known issue on the hinge. Samsung have this documented internally.
Support were advised to deny fault and to blame customer for damage, as to be honest most of these were damaged by users forcing the screen too far back. When assessed at the service centre they would most often be fixed as the centre would be paid that way. Refusing would lead to them having to contact the customer and argue about the refusal. They always took the easy option.
With this machine, be careful opening the screen. Pushing it too far back will cause the hinge to become loose from, and distort the case. The twisting action is then placed onto the case screws. The result is as seen above on the video.
Also, after something like 14-30days most shops can refuse support directly. It’s always best to contact the dealer directly. Samsung will recommend a local service centre if there is one, or return to the main centre in Telford for repair. If the machine is under 28days old, it is worth speaking to the seller for initial support.
January 14, 2011 at 9:52 am #205352VaughanMemberThe N510 was my first Samsung purchase. I absolutely love it and I have REALLY treated it carefully but after 13 months the “cracking” noise appeared and the hinge went. I took it apart to identify the problem and found that the weak plastic pillars which hold the metal threads had shattered. I tried the epoxy fix but there is insufficient plastic pillar remaining to hold any of the metal threads.
The design is clearly faulty and has insufficient strength. I have NEVER tried to open the screen too far.
I don’t suppose I’ll buy another Samsung product but I would like to keep this Netbook going because I love its performance.
I need to replace the entire top plastic case so does anyone know where I can buy one?
July 15, 2011 at 9:59 am #205228stevesMemberTo revive this thread, my screen hinge had also broken recently, after about 18 months of use.
I tried filling the void with plastic resin, but after leaving it to set, I found it wasn’t strong enough to hold the hinges in place.
I decided I’d be needing a new laptop anyway (or at least a new screen lid, if you can buy such parts), so to keep me going I drilled a hole straight through the back of the screen lid on both sides, using the screw holes in the metal hinge as a template. I then slid a bolt through and fixed it to the back of the screen lid using a nut and washer 🙂
As a fix it works fine, but it looks damned ugly – luckily my netbook doesn’t leave the house so it doesn’t matter.
Anyone in the UK had any success with sourcing a new screen lid (I assume that’s the part I’ll be needing)? Part numbers etc. would be helpful. On the other hand, I might just buy a new laptop.
