Hmm surprised it’s not been mentioned on here, but it appears quite a few NC10s are afflicted by a manufacturing fault with the screen. It manifests itself as two dark thumb-sized blotches midway between the centre and the lower left corner. Only had mine for 3 days before phoning up Samsung (they paid for UPS to pick it up to send to a service centre) – currently waiting for it to be returned as the online status says “repair complete”, though obviously it’s not repairable unless they swap the LCD panel so I’m hoping they’ll test a new one for blotches and send me that.
Wasn’t going to have the hassle and pay to send it back to the online retailer I bought it from, as they’d probably just send me a new one unopened which may have blotches too – it seems to be that common a problem.
If you Google for “nc10 blotch” you’ll see the big thread on Overclockers about it (including pic – post 432) – more and more people are coming out of the woodwork saying “mine’s like that too!”. We all have the same two dark patches in the same place, and it’s the worst LCD screen blemish I’ve come across as it’s right in the hotzone and not just a bit of bleed in a corner.
It’s one of those things that you think “yeah, the rest is great I can live with it” but it gets more and more annoying!
I’m back on my Eee701 (argh that keyboard!) now while I see what Samsung say..
PS Hope I don’t ruin any of your NC10s by pointing this out, as some of you out there may have this issue and haven’t noticed till now 😉
December 12, 2008 at 12:44 am #174888BeckyMemberHi there techno12 and welcome to the site. 🙂
I’ve been following the thread on Overclockers and saw the posts about the blotchy screen. I’m very fussy over the quality of displays and it was one of the first things I checked for (luckily I don’t seem to have a bad one).
I’m hoping there isn’t some kind of “panel lottery” going on, which is something I’ve had to deal with when buying TFT monitors in the past. Unfortunately, a few Samsung monitor models have been affected by this and shipped out panels from different production facilities with highly variable results. In fact, the monitor I bought for my hubby (and then myself) for Christmas last year was not the one I originally wanted because I wasn’t willing to risk getting one of those lower quality panels.
In the case of the NC10 though, it’s hopefully just a production fault – if it had been a 3rd-party panel they wouldn’t have offered a repair/exchange.
December 12, 2008 at 1:00 am #174990techno12MemberYeah it does seem to be a lottery, hopefully the odds of losing are low!
You must admit the blotches look terrible in that pic, as the poster on OC said, it’s worse in real life.
Looking forward to getting it back and contributing on here – I love the 7hrs I got the first day I had it!
December 12, 2008 at 9:19 am #174880jezMemberYou’re right I haven’t noticed anyone mention that here yet.
This is the link:blotch
I saw a really awful big blotch on that photo but then realised it is actually on the screen Im viewing the forum with rofl! I’m at work – after the last round of job cuts there are about 100 spare to swap with anyway!
The actual blotches aren’t all that noticible imo, or is that just the photo? I’m going to have a look when I’m home. Bah – fingers crossed mine isnt affected 🙁
December 12, 2008 at 1:28 pm #174991techno12MemberIt’s slightly worse than that photo – try looking at the photo from a distance – as the blotches are quite diffuse the further away you get the worse they appear.
You don’t notice them with busy stuff on screen (movies, pictures etc) – just when the background is largely plain. As I read a lot of forums it was infuriating me. I genuinely thought it was dirt and spent ages trying to clean the screen, but once I Googled and saw that others had the same blotch in the same place I knew it was a manufacturing problem (hopefully just the odd batch)
Still haven’t heard anything from Samsung – the ‘repair’ was completed 2 days ago. I’m hoping it’s with a courier…
December 12, 2008 at 5:23 pm #174972StriderMemberI bought a blue from Currys which had the blotches and took it back. I tried another blue and it was the same. The staff opened the other 2 in stock and all had exactly the same features. Hence I opted for the black
December 12, 2008 at 5:39 pm #174988saureyMemberI have minor blotches, exactly like that, but they only show on all white and they are very un-noticeable. Problem is, when you have to send a damn computer away, it’s like losing your left arm or temporarily. That’s how I feel anyway.
The thing in this world I absolutely hate the very most is sending crap off to get fixed or refunded.

December 12, 2008 at 6:36 pm #174933lucynethelMemberWell just checked mine here in California bought from Newegg. I have the 2 splotches in lower right. Now I need to figure out what to do……Suppose I would have to do a restore to wipe all MY stuff (for security?) then send it to them and wait for who KNOWS how long, then do a restore when I get a replacement unit. If this sounds correct, let me know.
Also, I need to weigh if it is worth the hassle or not. And wonder if it grows worse if I just keep this as is for now? DARN……..December 12, 2008 at 7:46 pm #174889BeckyMember[quote1229110843=Strider]

[/quote1229110843]My blue came from Currys and is absolutely fine. I wonder if yours got a bad batch in. It’s rather worrying for several of them to turn out like that all together otherwise.
The 3rd-party panels that have plagued monitors usually suffer from calibration issues and highly noticeable light bleed, but I haven’t come across any mention of blotches before.
December 12, 2008 at 9:55 pm #174934lucynethelMemberWell I just emailed Samsung. And I have NO idea if I should send them my computer back or live with it STILL! They responded PROMPTLY as follows:
_____________________________________________________________Thank you for contacting Samsung Electronics. We appreciate your interest in our newly released line of Notebook PC’s.
I apologize for the issue that you have experienced, but your NC10 will require service. What I will need from you is the full model # of the NC10 as well as your shipping address. Once received, I will then prepare a service ticket so that your NC10 can be repaired under warranty. Thank you and have a nice day.
Sincerely,
Matt

I have 2 blotches in the lower left of my screen especially noticeable when on a light or white screen.
1-Is this a problem?
2-Will it get worse?
3- Do I need to do anything? Thanks for advice, I LOVE this computer,
MikeDecember 12, 2008 at 11:53 pm #174906ploppoMemberI have the two blotches on mine – It isn’t too bad in general use. If you have a plain single colour screen then it is slightly obvious – if you are playing a game or watching a video or looking at pictures etc then I can’t really notice it.
It stood out more when I first had the NC10 as it is noticeable on a blank Windows backdrop. However, as soon as I am looking at a picture, etc – they blobs disappear.
If I had bought my NC in a high street shop, I may have taken it back.
Personally, it hasn’t been a major issue for me.
December 13, 2008 at 12:38 am #174992techno12MemberOh heck, I thought I might have opened up Pandora’s box! – sorry 😉
I phoned up Samsung tonight asking what had happened to mine (in for ‘repair’ with Digicare, their 3rd party repair company, but mine will need replacing as these blotches are an inherent flaw) – they’ll get back to me tomorrow apparently.
The tale of Currys opening them scares me, I suspect every single NC10 ever built has this defect, but to a greater or lesser degree (ie the majority aren’t noticeable)
ploppo – I know what you mean, a lot of the time you don’t notice it, but once you do it nags away and as the guy on the Overclockers forum says “it’s like two dark eyes staring at you”! – why put up with an absolutely horrendous screen flaw – none of the other netbooks have this as far as I am aware (my EeePC 701 has a lovely normal LCD screen – slightly variable backlight yes, with some bleed near the corners, as you’d expect from any LCD – the blotches on the NC10 are 100x worse!) [/quote1229129747]Lower right or lower left? Please day lower left!
I’m in the UK and sent mine via Samsung’s aftercare service – I left all my stuff on there (I only had it 3 days) as I am fully expecting a new machine so they can do what they like with my stuff.
I almost said “sod it, I will live with the blotches” but believe me, you get more and more annoyed by them.

Lower LEFT of screen. Roughly over F3 & F7 keys. Looking at me. just “STARING”…. Watching, waiting, wondering what I will do next……Besides having an extra pint that is? How depressing this is.December 13, 2008 at 1:24 am #174994techno12MemberI returned mine as you know – it’s a shocking flaw! I am now stuck in limbo as Samsung don’t know what Digicare have done with my unit. If they can’t see the flaw they’re f**king blind – those blotches are *not* acceptable, it’s 2008 ffs, not 1972!
PS Sorry for pointing it out to you guys! I genuinely thought only my unit was faulty, but I tried Googling and found other sufferers – as I said, once you notice it, you notice it!
