I just bought a Samsung 830 512 SSD. To use it reliably, I need to update the firmware first, because the two OSs I’ll be using it with after won’t run Samsung SSD Magician.
Trouble is, none of the computers I’ve connected the 830 to has recognized it, and Samsung SSD Magician can’t update the firmware for a drive it’s unable to see.
I’m currently connecting it with a SATA-to-USB cable by Apricorn. Every computer identifies the drive as a “USB mass storage device” and the manufacturer as Apricorn. Moreover, this is the same sort of cable that ships with the laptop-specific 830 package.
Interestingly, CrystalDiskInfo identifies the 830 by manufacturer and model, and offers tons of info about it, but nothing else does.
I’m trying to update the firmware on my NC10 running XP. Is there anything I can do to make the computer recognize the drive?
Also: Is it normal for the cable’s manufacturer to be recognized even as the drive’s is not?
I’ve contemplated buying a generic 2.5 USB enclosure and trying to connect with that, but I’d hate waste money and effort if the same thing’s going to happen.
I’ve read elsewhere that it helps to set the BIOS to AHCI, but that’s assuming you’ve installed the drive internally. My ultimate aim is to install my 830 in a different computer with a different OS once the firmware’s updated. To do that, I’d like to use USB if possible. If not, I’m willing to install it internally temporarily, but that seems a ridiculous measure, doesn’t it?
