MemberHi everyone,
One of the reasons I bought the sammy was to rip some of of DVD’s to the hard drive for watching on the plane and/or while on holiday.
Anyone got any favourite apps for doing this?
And if it’s a freebie, then so much the better 🙂
Thanks and bye.

Memberthere are a number of free apps to convert your dvd to vob files – dvd decrypter or dvdshrink.
A quick google will find the download pages.
VLC should play vobs without any conversionif you want to convert the vobs to avi / divx then there are a number of free apps
Handbrake
AutoGK
FairuseThere’s plenty of tools and I’m sure others will have their favourites
One point to note, howver, if that the conversion to avi / divx and takes a lot of processing power. I have a dual core desktop and conversion of a 2 hour movie can take 3-4 hours. Not sure the NC10 will be up to it.

MemberI use DVD Decrypter to convert DVDs to an ISO, then I mount the image using Daemon Tools.
I do the conversion on my desktop PC which takes about 20 minutes and transfer the finished ISO to the Sammy. This is quicker than converting to AVI, but obviously you get a full DVD-size image rather than a more manageable media file. As I don’t have that many DVDs and the conversion is so quick, this doesn’t bother me, but if you have a large collection and want to rip them all to your NC10 it’s probably not the best option.

MemberParkit and Baeck…thank you for the quick replies.
Becky…do I search for Deamon Tools and download them/it? And what do you mean by “mount the image”?
I’m an old fart that needs handholding through this entire process 🙂

MemberDownload Daemon Tools from:
http://www.disc-tools.com/download/daemonWhen installing, uncheck:
Integrate with windows explorer
Daemon tools search provider
Browser toolbar
(unless you like pop-up advertisements)After it installs (requires a reboot), start the program and a red icon will appear in your lower right taskbar. Right click it and select ‘virtual CD/DVD-ROM’, ‘device 0 (empty)’, then ‘mount image’. A window will open for you to locate the ISO file you want to use. Click “open” and your dvd will load. Start your movie viewer.
When done viewing, right click the red icon again to unmount the virtual disk.

Memberi use dvdfab to rip to avi, 2 pass encoding so average film size is around 1gig@1000bitrate, easy to use, sadly not free but still useful.
also use super to re-encode some files too.
all the above is ripped from my legal dvd collection.

Memberhave you tried it on the nc-10 and, if so, how long does it take to encode a movie?

MemberOnce you’ve got the vobs, another tool I quite like is Avidemux for doing the conversion to various formats.
If you just rip to an ISO then you’re looking at 4 gig per film, but still that’s a handful of films on the NC10’s disc.

MemberFree program. Can converse CD and DVD to many formats, incl. AVI.
I tried several apps to converse DVD’s to AVI (to watch movies on my Sammy while on airplane or train),
FormatFactory is may not be perfect for professionals, but for ripping DVD’s to AVI it is a good, it’s easy to use and FREE!.
Average file size after rip is about 750 Mb (1,5 hr. movie with settings for sound and bitrate set at standaard)

Version 1.65 is the latest version.
I just got this app since a week, ripped some DVD’s to AVI, works well, but still trying different settings to find out which setting gets me the best result

Memberah it appears to be back.
have tried it myself, good programme, encodes pretty quick but would like some more features like able to increase volume to 200% etc etc
can’t really complain tho as it is free and does what it says on the tin 🙂

MemberHi, I just want to thank people for sticking to the discussion of legitimate rips – ie where the copyright holder specifically allows this, or maybe you own the copyright!
As per forum rules discussion of DRM circumnavigation etc is not acceptable.
My 2 cents worth, check out http://www.doom9.org. If it’s not on that site, you probably don’t need to know it!

MemberI have a registered version of Magic DVD Ripper. Rips from dvd to any number of formats including mp4 & avi. Rips just the main film from the dvd so you don’t have to muck about with the dvd menu’s.
