i’ll be testing the epsxe emu with final fantasy 8 and 9. Ive already got them running on the asus eee notebook, so there isnt an issue of hardware requiremnts stopping me. once i get it all setup with screenshots and with the mods permission id like to post the emulator and its settings for others to use. the game isos you would have to find yourself.
November 29, 2008 at 3:42 am #172110bobbyMembergood news is that ff9 starts, cutscenes work and sound great
unfortunatly during in game battle sequences it slows down noticebly and the menu fails to appear so you have no idea what selection youre making.it could be down to the iso i have or the combinaion of graphic plugins im using, so need more time to check it out. hopefully ff8 is more straighfoward as its the only classic game i wish to play on the nc10
November 29, 2008 at 4:39 am #172111bobbyMemberjust did a quick run through of ff8 and its suffering from the same problem as ff9, no in battle menus. otherwise is totally playable, which is a shame that a small problem like that is hampering both games.
November 29, 2008 at 9:56 am #172108jezMemberHi Bobby! Under UK law I am jointly responsible for anything published on this site and I will be erring on the side of caution. Therefore I can’t allow any links to anything that is not strictly legal. Sorry for being a bit boring like that but I can’t take any risks.
If you want to let people know what you have done then that’s OK. Nothing to stop you starting up your own blog or something if you want to go into more detail!
Sorry about that but I have wife and family to feed and can’t get into anything controversial – thanks for your understanding 🙂
November 29, 2008 at 10:30 am #172114s162000MemberBobby, regarding poor framerates on FF8+9 have you tried pSX emulator I find it runs quite well on the NC10 it’s more CPU dependant.
Also you could try running in speed mode (function, F8)

[/quote1227974447]absolutely, no problem. i only intended this to be guide to those wanting to play a few classic ps1 titles on their nc10’s.
@ s162000, its not the speed of the game which is the problem but more of a few graphical issues in battle. a few others have had this problem which have been sorted through other plugins so ill try that next.
November 29, 2008 at 4:39 pm #172109jezMemberThanks bobby! I’m having a bit of a clamp down on stuff so your help on this is much appreciated. Please report any posts that discuss how to run games illegally.
Cheers mate.
December 12, 2008 at 3:23 am #172113bobbyMemberupdate: all works smoothly now across all ff titles on the ps1, emulated using epsxe(1.7.0). The problem was that i was using a video plugin that required T&L graphics input which intel GMA chipsets can emulate via software but is a poor substitute for the real deal.
my settings that work:
video: P.E.Op.S Soft Driver 1.18 configured to window mode
sound: ePSXe SPU core 1.7.0December 12, 2008 at 9:42 am #172115s162000MemberNice one thanks for the update thats really helpful Bobby. I am now using this emu instead as I was having XA sound issues on pSX. The only thing I don’t like is the filter on the graphics its a bit blurry? I like a nice pixely look is there any way to tweak this?
December 25, 2008 at 9:46 pm #172117AmatsuMemberHello. I’m using ePSXe 1.7 in Windows XP and I’m running FF9 with no problems or slowdowsn using the latest Pete’s D3D Plugin and Eteral SPU plugin for the sound. Here’s my config in Pete’s:
Note: in special games fix there is one for ff9 battle problem.
I would try psx emulator but I read in their forum that ff9 can cause crashes sometimes.
I’m still trying different plugins to see which one gives the best quality/performance.
December 25, 2008 at 10:54 pm #172116soutthpawMemberwould be interested to know which emulator you find works best, tried any N64 Emu’s yet?
December 27, 2008 at 6:30 pm #172118AmatsuMemberWell after some testing and searching information I’ve found that these final fantasy games have better performance on older versions of epsxe, 1.5.2 to be specific, I’ve tested it and it’s actually true, so I highly recommend using that version for these games.
Here’s my final config for Final Fantas 9 which I think gives a decent quality/performance:
Latest Pete’s D3D plugin:
Things to note:
– Remember to activate the special fix.
– I think you can safely apply a texture filter if you like without a performance drop, I decided to go without one as I find the graphics less blurry.
– If you find the ingame text font blurry try a 640×480 resolution, it should make the text more bearable but the 3D will also be affected due to a lower resolution.
– The battles transitions aren’t showing, if you want them you have to set the Framebuffer Textures to “Emulated vram” and the Framebuffer access to “Full software drawing”, but I warn you this will slow the game down sometimes.Latest Eteral Sound Plugin:
http://xs434.xs.to/xs434/08526/eteral502.jpg (Too large to display it here)– Nothing to comment here, if you set the graphics plugin and the sound plugin like the images there shouldn’t be any sound problems, at least I haven’t encountered yet. (I just completed the Ice Cavern). Set the reverb off for a better performance.
I’ll keep you informed as I advance through the game. Feel free to give me any feedback!
By the way, I’m running this on battery with normal mode.
December 30, 2008 at 11:34 pm #172119AmatsuMemberWell I just found out the culprit for my the bad performance in ePSXe, it’s the sound plugin. I’ve tried most of them, Eteral plugin, peops, adris…
Right now using ePSXe SPU core plugin and the performance problems are gone, I can even turn on most of the options I turned off before, it even runs fairly smooth with 2xSal texture, but it’s not a very nice effect in FF9, it gives some black artifacts.A little more info:
Using the other sound plugins if you hadn’t turned on the fps limit you could see how the fps was reaching 100fps easily, but with the fps limit activated it went back at 60fps with the difference that sometimes it was slowing down at 50-55 making the sound slow altogether (thus my quest to discover what graphics option was making it slow.)
I don’t know if this is only my case, but if you had the same problem try to use the internal spu plugin that comes with epsxe, I’m using the 1.7 version now.
I also tested this with chrono cross.
