I’ve had the nc10 for a few weeks, and it’s a neat toy… and much more than a toy. My desktop computer crashed last week, so I hooked the Sammy up to the big monitor and keyboard and am using it as my main computer until the desktop gets repaired. It’s terrific. One problem though…
I’d like to use Windows Live Messenger to check in on my granddaughter on the weekends, but I’m having an annoying audio problem. The video is excellent, but the incoming audio stream I get “motorboats” – ie cuts in and out every 500ms. It sounds like someone’s gargling.while they’re talking.
We gave it a try on my wife’s work laptop, and no problem, and then confirmed it was the Sammy’s problem by attempting an audio conference between my wife’s laptop and the Sammy. The problem is only at the Sammy’s receiving end… but only on Wijdows LIve. Sammy transmits perfectly on Windows Live, and I get perfect reception from the Pandora music site.
Has anyone else noted an issue between the nc10 and the Windows Live Messenger client?
February 1, 2009 at 10:00 pm #182064Uncle FrankMemberI’ll try this a different way.
Have any of you used your webcam for a video call? If so, how was the sound, and what was your client?
February 1, 2009 at 10:22 pm #182055Jonny BlondMemberMine was fine on skype! if that helps. im running win 7 thought.
February 2, 2009 at 1:57 am #182054dinoMemberworks fine on skype for me too, though the processor is easily overloaded. so if i was doing anything else during the conversation the audio did tend to be garbled as some of the feed was lost… may have sounded like a motorboat!

February 21, 2009 at 8:43 pm #182056BobHonMemberI don’t know if my problem is the same??? On BOTH Live Messenger and Skype video calls I get a REALLY annoying beep. beep, beep noise ALL THE TIME. My son doesn’t get it at his end and I’ve tried playing with the volume controls with no joy.
Any ideas gratefully recieved.February 22, 2009 at 1:22 am #182062Dr. ZoidbergMemberMake sure the settings in messenger for your mic and speakers are the actual mic and speakers on the sammy, rather than “windows default” or anything else.
February 23, 2009 at 7:07 pm #182065Uncle FrankMemberI’ve tried everything, to no avail. A neighbor brought over her laptop, and we were able to video conference through my network with no problems at all. It may be a problem with my machine or a design flaw in the nc-10. I’ll talk with customer support and see if I can return it for testing.
February 23, 2009 at 7:45 pm #182057BobHonMemberThanks for the help. I went through the Skype set up and it said to turn off the ‘microphone boost’ setting in control panel. Tried it with it left on and got major feedback, so turned it off. Haven’t tried it again yet.
Also as per suggestion checked sounds settings. It was set to a desktop PC with seperate speakers??? Now set as a laptop. I’ll let you know when I’ve tried it again.February 23, 2009 at 8:52 pm #182058BobHonMemberOkay, it works… Just spoke to my son at University, with no bleeping. Thanks Dr Zoidberg…

[/quote1235422887]I thoght I had better test my Skype so the wife and I had a video conference across the lounge (first time we have spoken for ages) 🙂
Seriously though I was very impressed with the Sammy both sound and Video.
Just a thought I turned the Acoustic Echo cancelling off as soon as I started using the Mic Input, that can cause ‘motor boating’. Control Panel – Realtek HD Audio Sound Effect Manager – Microphone. I have Noise suppresion and Acoustic Echo Cancellation both un checked.

[/quote1235427815]Thanks for the idea, but I had already unchecked those. I’m glad yours is working well.
February 26, 2009 at 8:37 pm #182059BobHonMemberI thought that I’d fixed mine.. but I hadn’t.
The test call that fooled me was voice only, and I got no beeping.
Now tried a video call and it beeps again. Turn the video off and the beep goes away.
Even when I’ve turned off virtually all other programmes, except Avast antivirus and Windows Defender.
Rats anybody got any other ideas.February 28, 2009 at 3:08 pm #182063Dr. ZoidbergMemberThere may be a video driver issue?
I’m having problems too with my skype video although of a different nature – the recipient sees a green vertical stripe or a blurry video.
Try the following:
1.) Make sure your video drivers are upto date. Go straight to the intel website’s download centre. Or download and install drivermax which will search for all of the most up-to-date drivers. This worked for me for a couple of calls although my video problems came back.
And/or
2.) – click “start” and choose the option to “run”;
– type “dxdiag” and confirm in OK;
– a screen will appear with “DirectX Diagnostic Tool”;
– chooses the “display” tab;
– disable the options “DirectDraw Acceleration” and “Direct3D
Acceleration”This didn’t work for me but it may for you.
3.) Download and install splitcam. Normally your webcam can only operate with one application. But splitcam allows multiple apps to use your webcam. This got rid of my green stripe problem but produced a blurry video. It also interferred with the PlayCam app that comes with your Sammy which was not a big deal since I never used it. The blurry video though was found to be even more annoying than the green strip.
March 3, 2009 at 9:57 pm #182060BobHonMemberThanks. I downloaded and installed Drivermax over the weekend and updated all of my drivers from there. Haven’t had a chance to try out a video call since then but should be able to do one tomorrow so will see what happens.
If this doesn’t work then I’ll try the DirectX Diagnostics.Someone also suggested going back to Messenger 8.5 as they had problems with Live Messenger. So that’s something else to try another day. Might try 8.5 on XP and Live on Vista.
Well I brought the NC10 as something to play with and it’s keeping me amused.
