Despite using a tiny phillips head screwdriver that was in my computer tools kit, I managed to strip the head of the screw and cannot remove it. When the computer was assembled it must have been by a 1000 pound gorilla. Anyway, what are my options? Geek squad?
Depending on your level of bravery your could drill out the screw head.
I doubt Geek squad would even know where to start.
Carefully drill the head off then replace screw or live with 1Gb.
If you are up for it, lever and pry up the opposite end with the location lug, then swivel cover with screw still attached, but don’t overlook the two locating lugs, one on each side of the RAM cover.
If it were me I’d drill or live with 1Gb.
Would a real geek wield a screwdriver or pay someone else?
I am wondering if the screwdriver you used was too tiny or not tiny enough. my screw was tight but undid OK with the right screwdriver.
You could leave it alone and try to remove the whole back instead. I’m pretty sure that you can leave the RAM door screwed shut and still remove the back. You are then able to get to the RAM.
Best make sure you have the right screwdriver though, otherwise you may strip more and maybe loose the warranty as well. I had to drill the head off a screw which holds the back on, unfortunately I was unable to get the rest of it out, so although I was able to open the back I now have a slightly loose keyboard.
I have heard tales of using a strong glue to glue a sacrificial screwdriver to the striped head, and being able to remove it that way. Not sure how well this would work though.
True, you can remove the whole back and get to the RAM-socket. The memory hatch is only connected to the back plate so when you remove the whole back plate then it goes with it.
