MemberNetbooks have become kind of a phenomenon this year. The NC10 represents perhaps the best of the bunch so far. There are a lot of reasons one might choose a netbook over some other portable or desktop computer.
I spend considerable time on the internet, reading. Much like some people spend their days reading books, magazines or newspapers, I read everything I can find on technology, world events, financial and business news; on the internet. And I like to recline on the couch or in a comfortable chair with a portable computer on my lap or on the cushion beside me.
I’d been looking to replace my aging MacBook and was considering the MacBook Air since it’s two pounds lighter than what I had. (Actually three pounds when you count the plexiglass platform I used to keep the heat off my legs.) A hot five pound computer on your lap for hours gets rather tiresome. But the Air is just too much money, and the new aluminum MacBook screen is too glossy.
So I started looking seriously at netbooks. The first reviews were showing up for the NC10, and with the talk of its great keyboard, bright matte screen and cool running Atom processor, my mind was made up quickly. This little Samsung couldn’t be better for hours and hours of couch surfing. I’m now a netbook fan for life! And perhaps I need to get a life. 🙂
What are your reasons for buying a netbook?

MemberI find myself using it more and more for day to day computing over my big ol’ desktop. Im on it now infront of the telly. Good price, great portability, I guess strictly it can’t do everything I want but it’s not far off!

MemberI too have the same issue with a very hot older macbook pro that I have to use a platform to keep cool.
I also am going to be doing a good amount of international travel for work and the Toshiba laptop I have for work is a bit too big and heavy for my tastes.
Another reason for me is the design/features I felt it far surpassed everything else in the competitive set.
I am a sucker for minimal design done well
Let’s hope I am as happy when i actually get to use it!

MemberI answered “all of the above”. I have been surfing in front of the TV for years, ultimately it can do all I want and the price made it an ideal choice.

MemberTo me, the advantage of a netbook is the battery life – it is a clear selling point.

MemberI left that out. The battery life does seem to be great. I can get about 5 and a half hours out of my wife’s Sony Vaio TZ and I expect this to be as good or better

MemberHI all. FIrst post (but sure some of you may already know me 😉 )
Anyway, reason for my purchase of a netbook was because it was (orignally) so cheap and was very useful for 4 main reasons for owning a portable PC device:
– Email
– Browsing
– Skype/Messenger
– watching movies on the move or in bed.I have a decent desktop already and previously a 12 inch and 15.4 inch Dell. Sold the 2 laptops and, if anything, netbook replaces the Dell 12 inch.
Started with the Asus 701 4G then onto the 900 and now onto the NC10 – all in under a year!
Got the white one despite ordering the black from Play.com. Blue does look very nice though.
Hello DVDF massiv BTW.

MemberMy main reasons are portability and battery life. I used to have a vaio TX (predecessor of the TZ), but that one got stolen. I didn’t really have the money to buy a new TX/TZ, so then the cheapness of netbooks made me buy one (especially when the NC10 came along with its impressive battery life).
It was a bit difficult what to choose in the poll, but I went with portability anyway, since that’s the main reason I started buying small laptops in the first place.November 29, 2008 at 2:28 pm #172127Becky
MemberI find having a netbook handy for when I quickly want to check my email without booting up my main PC, or for surfing in bed or in front of the telly. I didn’t want to spend lots of money on a laptop for doing such simple tasks.
I also play a lot of budget indie games (match-3, seek-and-find etc) and the NC10 seems to handle these just fine.
I am particularly impressed with the battery life on the NC10 – I can spend a whole evening doing stuff without worrying if the battery is going to fail in the middle of something and even then there’s still 50% or more life left. I previously had a 17″ laptop which although lovely, I was lucky to get a couple of hours use out of and ended up carting the enormous power brick with me everywhere.

MemberI’ve ordered one because I am sick of going through to uni and cannot get access to a computer as they are always busy. Im doing my Masters now and so need to computer for so much research. I have a standard laptop in the house already, but my partner is using a dinosour of a thing at the moment. He wanted a new laptop…. I wanted a more portable laptop…. so we’re both paying half – he gets my laptop, i get the new shiny, portable NC10 woop woop.

MemberGreat question!
I knew I needed to replace my dinosaur of a Dell Win XP computer, and Vista isn’t allowed in my home (no offense to anyone.) Since I would need to replace the peripherals such as printer, etc., anyway, I started researching the Mac, and was sold.
I’ve always had a desktop computer… more options for less money. I considered the MacBookPro, but it was so much more expensive than an iMac, and I didn’t think I could get used to a smaller screen. I’m doing a lot of web and photo work, and keeping my eyesight mattered to me! I chose newer the 20″ iMac, and love it. Installed Parallels, moved everything from my old PC… life was good. I find I almost never go to Parallels, finding and using Mac programs instead.
I work at home. Which means I’m never really leaving work. The idea of being able to sit on the sofa in front of the fireplace, and write email or surf the web became more and more alluring.
I saw a Dell Mini 9 as I was flipping tv channels, and was intrigued.
I started researching, and knew I wanted a sizable hard drive, wifi, and something that was big enough to be able to do real writing and reading.
I read everything I could find, and was “sold” on the Asus 1000H. In one of the Asus forums, I started reading about the NC10. And realized… I wanted the NC10! One thing that makes me chuckle… one of the drawing points for me was that it was white, due to all the complaints about the Asus and fingerprints! Reading the specs and reviews, I was more than leaning, and then finding this forum and what was written here sealed the deal. The NC10 for me!
And with your help so that the computers now see each other… I couldn’t be happier! I really am smitten with the NC10.

MemberI always find myself picking my laptop up over my pc,as i’d rather be in the sitting room with my family, being semi-social :P…
My pc is in my room, but my laptop was noisy, quiet heavy and somewhat outdated, the graphics were terrible battery around 20 mins and processor was slow..
I just started reading up on the advent netbook over 2 hours bat life great performance standard ram as good as my laptops max ram and it’s actually able to play game,my laptop got 5-6 fps on COD max…
Also portability is a huge thing for me,i plan to get a job in either I.T or photography both of which computers play a vital part in,so in college my laptop can be my portable “Darkroom” if i chose photography of my work machine if i go into I.T
So this really suits my need

MemberOne of the the greatest things about this pretty baby is it’s battery lifetime, which makes it a real portable experience and therefore a must buy compare to similar netbooks in the market.
My thanks go out to Samsung for delivering this beauty 🙂November 30, 2008 at 11:30 am #172125jez

[/quote1228044564]That was an unexpected bonus for me. I would go and “just do one quick thing” on the desktop and be on it for hours. At least this way with the netbook you can still be sat on the sofa.
