MemberI’m always tossed up on dual booting – I get rather attached to one OS, and the other just wastes away. Really, the only reason I have a need for Windows is iTunes & syncing my iPhone, along with some work stuff. I love Linux for the customization, along with the fact no one wants to use my PC because they don’t know where anything is. So, how many people out there are dual booting?

MemberXP Home for me. There is nothing that provides a strong enough pull for me to spend the time and hassle changing it!

I tried the same setup and there was nothing in Ubuntu that it did any better than XP. though its a lot easier install and the software is improving, if you don’t have a good understanding of Linux Command Line operations then its just doesn’t work that well. Nice to see its making progress though, I understand DOS command line as used it back in the 80’s with my first PC… Linux will need to become totally a graphical interface like XP before it’s going to get accepted by the masses…. I would love to leave MS behind and Apple is no better as a corporate overlord of OS’s but I don’t have the time or resources to learn Linux command line etc.December 20, 2008 at 10:24 am #176422BlackWhizz

Yes, i’ve got excactly the same opinion. Much worked, but brightness shortkeys wont work, desktop effects was fun (the cube also). But sound didnt work wel (yes, it worked on the speakers and on the headphones, but when i put my headphones in the jack, the speakers were still working.Ubuntu has got to be more easier to get in. Like a driver wizard or something (debug wizard, what isnt working etc).
Also i wasnt impressed how ‘efficient’ it was on the screen. I mean, you’ve got 2 bars (on top and on the bottom). Thats 50 pixels less space. Firefox toolbars also take 100 px. So i want inpressed with that too.

The problem is that the manufacturers often don’t make drivers for Linux, so it usually takes a while before everything is fully supported. On my old laptop it took several years before everything worked correctly and I could pretty much install any distribution and have everything work straight away. This is more of a worst case scenario though.
As for the efficiency on the screen, Gnome can be easily made to use one bar (without any use of the command line), and if you want to get better efficiency there are other desktop environments which can be installed.
The thing to remember is that Linux is not Windows, anyway enough of my ramblings. Now where is my Plan9 disk image…

MemberNot sure why but I like Vista Home Premium. I have it on all my computers including my NC-10 and my girlfriends Aspire One. I tried Ubuntu on the Aspire One but I clearly need more hands on experience with Linux before I try a fresh install again. I have no experience with line command operation and it showed.
The NC-10 runs Vista Premium just fine with 2gb of memory. I like Aero and it works fine on the NC-10. It was not hard to find Vista drivers. I found some good drivers on the manufacturers web sites such as Intel and Synaptics. Others came from Samsung’s own site. I installed software and drivers from other Samsung laptop models that run Vista Premium and they work great on the NC-10.
