After getting a great deal with t-mobile to use my existing HSDPA Mobile and sim as a bluetooth modem. ( requiring no mods ) for £7pm ( 10gig p/m fair usage ) I want to see what speed everyone on “mobile broadband” is getting.
I’m pulling around 400kbps in speed tests ( HSDPA & Bluetoothing to sammy ). but I can’t relate it to anything. Browsing is great, i can stream video from iplayer ( normal quality, and runs smoothly if i allow a min of buffering at start )
i just wondered if the dongles ( especially t-mobile ones ) are faster ( even thought t-mobile told me there the same )
BTW FYI: you can still use the phone as normal ( calls txt’s etc ) while its connected. could be a good cheep solution to the 3g issue
I have a Vodafone 3G dongle and I live in Cornwall where 3G coverage is quite patchy. I get a “poor” or “very poor” signal generally so I never get over 200kbps, which is adequate for me.
The speed you will get will depend entirely on signal strength. So it would only be a fair playing field if you tried a 3G phone and dongle from the same network in the same locatiion?
yer there are loads of variables. just trying to gather the average speeds over the uk. to get an idea where my connection lies. i will report back when i try different locations.
WMWifiRouter is a great application, and does just this;
You have the option of limiting the quality of images so that browsing loads much snappier, you hardly even notice for 90% of the page you’ll visit. But makes the world of difference to your d/l limit and load times.
fire fox compresses the image quality alredy knowing the speed its downloading pictures. you can overwright the setting if you want too
