There are a few annoying icons in the notification area – for example since I connect via wireless I don’t need to know that the LAN cable is disconnected.
I have tried to right click the taskbar and then change each icon I don’t want to always hide, but they go back to default with every restart.
Any tips?
February 12, 2009 at 5:27 am #183465asitmcMemberCan’t you right click it and select disable? I thought it goes away if you disable it. If not, I guess someone else should be able to help ya.
If there are random icons for applications and programs, you can stop them from booting up when you turn on the laptop.
click start and on the search field, type msconfig. A window pops up and it should have a start-up tab.
Whatever you don’t want to see at the startup, uncheck the box!

If you carry out the below, you should not receive any further notifications or see the network icon related to your LAN connection.– My Computer = My Network Places => View network connections =>right-click on the LAN connection and select Properties => Untick ‘Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity’
February 12, 2009 at 10:34 am #183458FreddyMember+ if you want, disable “Local Area Connection” (cable) then you won’t see an icon at all in the notification area.

Yes, there’s that too 😛February 12, 2009 at 2:44 pm #183461Dr. ZoidbergMemberThanks!
February 12, 2009 at 7:20 pm #183462Dr. ZoidbergMemberWell, looks like it still pops back up in the notification area after every restart. In the LAN properties both notification boxes are unchecked. And of course, right-clicking the taskbar, the always hide icon selection has defaulted back to hide when inactive. Curiously, there is no name associated with the LAN icon under the taskbar properties, whereas before it was named LAN or something similar.
February 12, 2009 at 7:50 pm #183459FreddyMemberRight-click on the that LAN-connection in Network Connections and Disable and it will be gone, ok?

[/quote1234468138]February 12, 2009 at 9:51 pm #183463Dr. ZoidbergMemberDisabling did it. But pretty annoying if my wife wants to connect via LAN and didn’t know I disabled it. It’s a shame that selecting the options to not show you in the notification area still shows it in the notification area.
Are there any suggestions to make the LAN not default to “Hide when inactive” in the notification area after a restart?
February 13, 2009 at 10:11 am #183460FreddyMemberYou can either have it removed or let it show all of the time.
If you want to remove it all together then yes – disable works.
If you want it to show all of the time then enable, tick the both “notify” options in properties and change it to “Always show”.If this doesn’t work for you then it can because you have more than one profile/user. Then you should try to change the settings as admin and see if that helps. Worst case is you have to change some registry settings. I do not know exactly how but using Google you can probably find out.

[/quote1234519649]February 22, 2009 at 1:09 am #183464Dr. ZoidbergMemberWould you believe every now and then something somehow re-enables the damn LAN and I have the manually re-disable it!?!
P.S. – if the only way for it not to show in the notification area is to disable it, then what is the point of the ‘notify’ boxes?
