MemberI have no idea what ratio to partition the drive by. If some one could assist I would be eternally grateful. My Sammy arrives tomorrow (supposedly) and Iwant to do this right the first time. Please advice me accordingly based on the following information:
I plan to get an external usb powered dvd burner/player to watch movies on plane rides.
I plan to install either Microsoft office or some type of word processing program.
I plan to save lots of pictures.
I have portable usb powered external drive 500gb so I can do backups of my files automatically.
I will probably install roxio nero or something to make music cds/mp3scds.
I will have some games, not graphic intensive of course but some card games and such matching games as bejewel.I think that’s about it. so if you have stuck it out with me thus far I am basically going to do surfing, emailing, music files and burning and picture album saving. Oh and of course some low key games
So can someone please advise on how to partition drive in a way that I later will not regret or find inadequate for programs and files.
Again thanks a million. Speedy response greatly appreciated.

MemberIts a personal choice really but for both my NC10 and Sammy R60+ (which both have the same drive sizes) I went the 50/50 route.
My use will be prety much the same and I use an external disk for storing my music etc and just copy onto the laptops as needed.
With a 50/50 route I can be certain than I will always have enough room on the 2nd partition to hold a backup of the 1st.
But it is a personal choice and only you can really decide whats best for how you use it.
I doubt i have been that much help but thought id reply lol !

MemberI left mine as the default (is that 50/50 I forget?).
To be honest with 160gb you shouldn’t need to worry too much unless you have a huuuuge music collection! On my desktop I tend to have a “system” partition and then move “My Documents” to another drive so it’s easy to backup or blow away the original OS and reinstall.
I dont store anything “permenant” on my NC10 so that’s not really an issue. I think if we had 8gb SSD drives then this would all be a big struggle but with 160gb it’s not such a worry – that’s actually a lot of space for most people…

MemberThanks Kirkuk for your reply. Just that you took the time to write an answer is good for me but your answer does help me. It is good to know what the general public is partitioning to.
Jez, Thank you also for your reply. I was a bit concerned because i Do have a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE music collection (All in cds). I have a 160gb ipod BUTI want to do my cds over in just mp3 format.
I want to use sammy as a digital album for pictures and as a jukebox (connected to outside audio of course) at gatherings.
I might install office xp (I tried open office but experienced a lot of freezing and program hanging with vista) and I plan to install roxio as well ,they always want a picture or music cd to take with them.
I currently own Norton Internet security 2009 for up to 3 computers. But I might go with the free Antivirus since I heard Norton slows the nc10 down,
I also want to use spyware blaster and spybot search and destroy they are very good.
I have bejewel my favorite relaxing game and some solitaire games as well.
Just want to make sureI do this right so It does not cost me time or $ later.
Anyhow , please advise on all this programs and if the free are less space hogging.
Free antivius free ripping/burnign software etc. Thank you so very Much.

Hello Sammysgirl, I’m sure you will be pleased with your purchase when it arrives. For me it does everything I need and more. I partitioned mine C: 40; D: 120 as my intended use is very similar to yours. I will use the D: drive for all my data and backups, leaving C: for the OS and all the installed progs. I will use an external drive for backing up My Docs.
As for Antivirus, I parted company with Norton on my desktop (now got Kaspersky) as it was such a resource hogger, although I believe 2009 version is better. I use AVG anti virus, which is free. Version 8 is quite bloated, so I’m using v7, on my laptop and NC10, which I retrieved from http://www.oldversion.com.
As for photo editing Jez recommends Paint.net wich I have just installed. it’s a lightweight prog & reminds me of Paint Shop Pro. For photo viewing, I intend to use Photo Commander 6 from Ashampoo, which is excellent for full screen slideshows and basic editing. It also has lots of options for index sheets, batch renaming, photo management and loads of other good stuff. Version 7 also does panoramas.
If you take movie files with your digital camera, WMP might not play them. My camera produces .MOV files, which will not play on WMP or GOM player. On kirkup’s advice I have installed Apple Quick Time which works very well.

MemberThank you Chris for all that valuable info. I have Norton 2009 (on my 15 inch laptop) it has toned down quite a lot on the hogging and slowing down. I will look into those programs you mentioned and the division of the drive you rec sounds good. Basically, for me its music and pictures and surfing to shop and to learn.
Don’t you just love this forum!!!
Thanks

MemberAlso went the 50/50 route. I normally to a system and data partition on most my PCs anyway, which is safer if you have to restore a backup of the system partition without touching the data.
I then installed TrueCrypt and created a container file taking up the majority of the data partition (with a little to spare just in case), and this becomes my real data partition. I could have encrypted the partition itself or the whole drive, but there are issues with backup software I find if you do that.
I’ve moved my Thunderbird profile to be inside the TrueCrypt container which ensures my emails are stored encrypted. You can do the same with Firefox. Sadly you can’t do much about Google Chrome at the moment, but hopefully there will be a way to move the profile at some point.
I’ll move My Documents to the container too once I’ve remembered how to do it.
As for Anti-virus. AVG or Avast! are the usual recommended ones for least bloat and quality AV. I’ve gone for the Internet Security package from AVG which includes firewall. Used to have Norton but ditched it a few years back due to excessive bloat and resource hogging. AVG is very minimal on resources by comparison.
Don’t forget to strip out McAfee entirely first (Add/remove isn’t enough). The removal tool is mentioned in this thread.

MemberUse the feee ClamWin AV – very small footprint.
Media PLayer Classic is a good meida player or VLC Player.

MemberI went first for 40/120. But, well i changed it. Its now 20/140. Why? Im weird 😛
C: 20gb [Windows + Office + Music player + Antivirus]
D: 140gb [Games + Documents]I installed all my needed apps (Word/Foobar2000/NOD32) on the C drive. The D drive is used for crap.
Also i’ve got a file server at home (4TB) so ill backup on the server 🙂

MemberThanks to all for reading and answering my post. Thanks to Becky for the website to get games. Thanks to you all (Esp.B) who are crossing your fingers for me to get a healthy screen. Jez, yeah that’s an interesting poll . I,m not that old but I am an old soul when it comes to music.)
Jez under FAQ I left a post for you. Please read it. Because I think I love you (figuratively speaking of course.
Anyhow, checked UPS, my Sammy is in transit. I should have it before the end of this evening. First thing after activation, check for blotches on white screen. Will keep you guys posted. Chris thanks for your input regarding partition. I am thinking of making d drive bigger due to large music collection. You guys are great!!!

MemberHi everybody,
Typing this from my new blue Sammy. For everyone who crossed their fingers thank you thank you thank you! So far I do not perceive any blotches. I am loving this little toy. Today is Christmas morning for me.
Decided to not make any partition after all. Will try it out and see what happens. So much thanks to the person who posted that this was available at Costco. I was checking day in and out. Then I gave up and boom I come to this forum and someonesw says they have it. I ordered right away and here I am happy as a clam in its shell. (Costco gives you 90 days for returns)
The keyboard is excellent. The only thing is that the track pad click buttons are very small and almost falling of the computer (right on the edge). Definitely will need a mouse for extended use. Will keep you guys posted.

MemberQuote:Can somebody post how to move ‘My Documents’ from C: to D: ….. not just drag’n’drop …. but so the pointers will work.Just right click on “My Documents” either on the Start menu or on the desktop.
On the “Target” tab click “Move”
Select the new location and viola. It will also ask if you want to move existing documents to the new location.
All shortcuts within windows will now point to the new “My Documents” location.
