Memberhi im currently a 20 year old student and was wondering would this little machine be suffice for what i would be doing!
All i want to do is be able to carry something small and compact into university and be able to use word and browse the net whilst there.
Also when i get home just again be able to use itunes and msn messenger and browse the net.
would this machine do?? me doing these things is it worth getting the 2GB upgrade?
i have to admit ive read almost everything on this website and love this machine and ive almost convinced myself into getting it but im still thinking shall i get a 15″ laptop!cheers

MemberHi Mark. 🙂 It sounds like a netbook would be absolutely ideal for you, the purposes you wish to use it for are exactly what they are designed for.
A 15″ notebook would obviously be more powerful, but sounds like overkill for your needs, plus it wouldn’t be anywhere near as portable.
You’ll need to install your Office apps via either a networked or portable CD/DVD drive, unless Microsoft lets you download them. I haven’t installed iTunes yet, but I’ll give it a go in a minute and let you know if there’s any problems. Chatting away on IM clients is particularly good on the NC10 because of the generous keyboard size – I got used to touch-typing on it very quickly.
Personally, I don’t think the upgrade to 2Gb is necessary in your case unless you intend to be multi-tasking or want to upgrade to Vista.
Hope this gives you a start. 🙂

MemberJust installed iTunes and hooked up my iPod, everything seems to work fine.
A member reported a problem playing movies bought from the iTunes store, but oddly enough TV shows are fine. Here’s the thread if you want to check it out:

MemberIn low light situations (like University lecture halls) I have found that my generic white Sammy keyboard is very easy to read. And I am the one giving the lectures (LOL).

MemberI’m guessing you teach science then! Yeah I think that is a good point actually. I think generally people agree that the white is more visible.

MemberDMB1… I ordered this (in white) for the exact same uses you mentioned in your post. Im at uni doing my Masters, and since i travel to and from uni each day i would like to have a netbook with me so i can access the wireless internet from anywhere in the uni. I wont really be downloading… much, and i really need it for typing up stuff (hence the attractive keyboard), browsing the net, and uh… thats it really…. So this seemed like the best option for me. Im waiting on the DHL man chapping on my door…. any…. minute…. now! lol

[/quote1228233208]jez is right, I would personally try to sell you the blue lol. But colour is very much a personal thing, so it’s really down to you. Scientist makes an excellent point though about taking into consideration the environment you will be using it in and seeing if a certain colour is particularly beneficial.

[/quote1228233321]I’ve never bought/rented a movie from iTunes, but perhaps I will give it a go and see if I can replicate those problems. 🙂

Take if from me–carrying a 15″ laptop everywhere on a university is a burden, and doubly so if you take it to lectures. That’s exactly why I got my NC10, and so far it has worked a charm. True, I’ve had it for about a day now, but I’ve already taken it to class and found that it clears up the bulk problem nicely.
As far as your usage, I agree with the other people who responded–you definitely can accomplish all those things with a netbook. You might still need access to a traditional computer for some things (anything involving an optical drive, for example), but for most uses a netbook should be ideal.
Just for consideration, the Atom is roughly equivalent in performance to an upper midrange Pentium M, which powered an entire generation of proper notebooks around 2004 – 2005. In other words, it’s plenty powerful for most anything but computationally heavy tasks.
Oh, and I’d go with the blue one, though of course I’m biased because that’s the one I have. 🙂 If the black one were offered here in the US I might have been torn but ultimately picked the blue one, anyway. Blue stands out in a world of black, and white, IMHO, is almost trademarked by Apple. 😉

[/quote1228417420]If you were considering running Vista on an NC10, you’d almost certainly want to upgrade the RAM to 2 GB. You could probably have this done in the shop where you purchase the machine, or else do it yourself if you’re up to the task. It’s not too difficult, but keep in mind that there is only one RAM slot in this unit. Sometimes 2 GB of memory is sold in pairs of 1 GB modules, which won’t do you any good.
But getting back to Vista, you could check out this thread in this forum. Seriously, though, I would say that unless you have a really good reason to upgrade to Vista, sticking with XP would be your best bet. It’s less resource-intensive, more compatible with legacy hardware and software, and frankly you’re not missing much with Vista.
Keep in mind I’m not one of those all-too-common Vista bashers who have never even used the OS but just repeat what they hear–I’ve had Vista on two of my computers, and ultimately I wasn’t terribly impressed. There was nothing about Vista that made it a compelling upgrade, and the user permissions model is horribly broken (e.g. sometimes you can’t do administrator-level tasks, even if you have an Administrator account and “grant” yourself permission–you need to do a total system reboot).
As far as Vista on an NC10, I wouldn’t recommend it, if only because it’s not really worth the risk of complications.

MemberI would recommend this:
NC10 + 2gigs of ram
Optional, a high-res screen.Im used to dual screen, but this screen is small, but has enough space for surfing the web, typing letters in word, only powerpoint is small, with notes on the bottom.
I would recommend 2 gigs of ram because you’ll get the option to disabled the swap file. Which optimizes the harddisk speed and saves a little battery.
The high res screen, because when you’re at home and you want to see a movie. Its just much better on a bigger screen. But as i say. Its optional. SO your choice 😉
