Ordered my NC10 today and looking to put Office on it to do my word processing (get it cheap thanks to being a student($32)).
So the question becomes, is it possible to transfer the file from DVD to the USB then to the NC.
I’m also interested in using Ubuntu or a Linux OS to surf the web on, is it true that the Linux OS cannot get a virus? and can I put iTunes onto Linux/Ubuntu?
Thanks for all the help,
DubieFebruary 11, 2009 at 5:51 am #183383ShutterBugSteveMemberI’ve installed Office 2007 from USB. I just copied the contents of the CD to my USB drive and installed from there. No issues at all.
Can’t answer your questions about Linux though as I’ve never used it.

Basically you are safe with Linux, and you don’t need anti-virus or anti-malware programs. There are a couple of threats out there, but that is a very very small amount compared to Windows. And the additional security in the form of security permissions and accounts mean that it would be difficult to infect the whole system.

Kind of, remember Linux is not Windows (or OS X) and so cannot directly run Windows programs. It is possible to get iTunes to work using a program called Wine, which can be used to run Windows programs on Linux, though I seem to remember that its not easy to get the latest version of iTunes to work.As long as your music isn’t protected (the old DRM type sold at the iTunes store) you can use other applications like Rhythmbox, Banshee etc… instead to organise and play your music.

If it’s another PC and its on a (home) network … you can just share the DVD reader across the network … then just pop the DVD into the reader – Goto Network Places on your Sammy, double-click the DVD drive and the installer should run.February 11, 2009 at 7:25 pm #183385dubieMemberCould I just use a Cat5 cable to network them together?
Will they recognize each other, or do I have to set up a network to then work from?February 12, 2009 at 11:32 pm #183382hufnMemberYou cannot directly connect them with the cat5 cable – it has to go through a hub/switch. However, do you have a network in your home? If you do you can do as was mentioned and share it out. However, all you need to do for the usb is place the dvd in a computer drive, plug in your flash drive with room, open both, then select and drag all the files from the dvd to the flash drive. Plug the drive into the nc10, hit setup and have fun 🙂 It’s pretty easy overall…

I often connect computers together directly using a standard cat5 (well I often use cat6 but that doesn’t matter) cable, it works fine once you’ve set it up correctly (static IP addresses etc…). -
