MemberHi everyone,
I purchased an NC10 this afternoon on a bit of a whim; the money was burning a hole in my pocket.
However, after downloading all the updates and after loading some software on it, I’ve realised I made a newbie mistake during setup and I’ve been left with a 50/50 C/D partition which I don’t really want. I wrongly assumed that the partitions it would be set up would be a small one for XP and a much larger one for data.
Can some kind soul offer me advice on the best way to reconfigure the NC 10 to a single partition? I can’t seem to find any mention within the manual of a factory re-install solution which would restore the NC 10 back to as new.
I also intend to remove the Recovery Solution software as I run a Windows Home Server which automatically backs up my PC’s every day.
Thanks in advance to anyone kind enough to offer me some advice.
Regards
Carl 🙂

MemberHi there Carl. I can’t say how exactly to reset the partitions as I’m in the same boat as you but I wouldn’t worry about it. I mean will you be needing all that space on the hard drive?
I done a partition of 50GB to 90GB and I don’t think it’s really much of an issue unless you have large files like movies and music.February 8, 2009 at 3:36 am #182923Freddy
MemberI’m not sure, but if you use Samsung Recovery and to a complete reinstall then I think you can choose how to set up your partitions from the beginning. If not you can resize your partitions by using a program like Partition Magic.

If you hit F4 whilst booting your NC10, the Recovery Partition will restore XP without having to attach a CD/DVD drive or USB stick.[quote1234080222=cme]

Do you also wish to remove the 6 GB recovery partition? It is easy to create a single partition of the whole disk if you do a ‘clean’ install of XP Home as supplied on the Samsung Recovery Disk using an USB boot drive created using WinSetupFromUSB as explained in the following excellent guide:
You can then install the drivers from the System Software Media, but personally I haven’t installed any Samsung software – I reckon I can manage my NC10 using Windows Control Panel. For the latest versions of the drivers you can download them from the SamsungPC website.
And you may wish to try a couple of free utilities to keep your Sammy in tip-top condition. One is DriverMax. “DriverMax allows you to download the latest driver updates for your computer. No more searching for rare drivers on discs or on the web or inserting one installation CD after the other. Just create a free account, log in, and start downloading the updates that you need. You can also export all your current drivers (or just the ones that work ok) to a folder or a compressed file. After reinstalling Windows you will have everything in one place!”
The other is CCleaner. “CCleaner (originally CrapCleaner) s a freeware system optimisation, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner. But the best part is that it’s fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware! :)”

MemberHi everyone and thank you all very much for your replies 🙂 I have been reading and absorbing the information you have all kindly offered as well as reading up a bit more on the NC 10.
Based on your suggestions I propose to
1. Use EASEUS Partition manager to delete partition D and then expand partition C to full capacity.
2. I have decided, if possible to keep Samsung Recovery. Will it still work if I delete Partition D? Does it need a separate partition to actually work?
Will what I propose work ok or would there be any adverse effects in doing what I propose.
Once again, thanks in advance to anyone kind enough to offer me some advice.
Regards
Carl 🙂

Yep…that’ll do it 🙂[quote1234099107=cme]

The Samsung Recovery Partition is hidden under normal use, although you will see when using partitioning tools like Easeus. So, yes it will still work if you delete Partition D, and yes it does need a separate partition to work, but that partition is hidden and only accessed when you hit F4 during bootload.

MemberJust a quick heads up.
If you have any data or settings you wish to save, ensure you back them up before you start to manipulate partitions.
Just in case 😉

I don’t think the backup functionality will work as it requires a separate partition from the C drive to backup to (and not the hidden one). However as TCMuffin said, the system restore functionality should still work fine.February 8, 2009 at 1:33 pm #182933cme
MemberThank you very much Jayne for you continued help 🙂
I have backed the NC10 up on my Windows Home Server so hopefully that should be sufficient. I have also held off putting too much on it until I have resolved the partition problem.
Thanks once again Jayne

Carl 🙂

[/quote1234100377]Thanks for the input Alfihar 🙂 I’m actually more interested in the restore functionality. I have a Windows Home Server which is set to automatically back up all my PC’s overnight, so losing data should not be too much of a problem provided the NC10 is functioning ok.
So it sounds as though I’m on the right path.

Carl.

MemberWell that was all pretty painless I must say, five minutes and a couple of system restarts and its all done.
Thank you very much for everyone’s help 🙂
