MemberHi
I have a Dell 1720 and thinking of getting a Samsung NC10.
Just a couple of questions.1) Can i copy some of my DVD collection and put them on either computer’s hard drive to watch. I assume you must have to convert them into smaller files. If so what programe can i use and is it a downloadable freebee?
2) Can i use the DVD drive from the Dell to copy software etc and put onto the Samsung with linking the 2 computers together, as the Samsung doesn’t have a optical drive. Or do you copy and save the software to a dongle on the Dell and then install it to the Samsung?
Any advise most welcome.

MemberWelcome to the site.
1.) Bit of a grey area whether copying your DVD collection onto your PC for personal use is legal or not. I’m sure there are many different opinions about this. There are lots of pieces of freeware available that do this – Google is your friend.
2.) Yes you can network the two computers together to share a CD/DVD drive or copy the contents of the CD/DVD onto a memory stick and install from there. Both are effective methods.

MemberNC10.
Thanks.
Q1. What terminology do i search with? Also which is the best format to convert them to which also uses the less amount of hard drive.
Q2. How do you “Network” the pc’c together. Very simple info needed.

Thanks for you help. Think i’m starting to understand the correct terminology etc.
One last quick question. What would the best format to keep the DVD’s once copied, MP4, AVI etc. I persume some will be smaller files, but will you have lost a lot of quality etc?

MemberMy preference would be AVI using a DIVX/XVID codec which offers a reasonable size to quality ratio.
For the NC10’s 10.2″ screen you won’t need anything better than a 700mb AVI file per film (you could probably even get away with less than this).
There is a converter here which will convert DVD Vob files to avi. You can set the final file size as 700mb.
Be aware though converting these files is a very time consuming and resource intensive process. And as I previously mentioned it is still a grey area. You should only be doing this to “back up” DVD’s that you own.

MemberWelcome to the site Steve, looks like adatay92 has sorted you out. Another good resource for this sort of thing is the doom9 site. But as already mentioned whether you can do this legally or not depends on the laws of where you live, the copyright status of the disc, the phase of the moon, etc. In the UK it is technically illegal, even for personal use :(. You’ll have to make your own decision on that.
Obviously some discs may not be subject to copyright so in those cases that’s fine, eg your home camcorder movies! I can’t allow any chat on the forum on how to circumnavigate DRM (copy protection) but you’ll find all you need to know if you look around the net.
Any NC10 specific questions then feel free to fire away!
