MemberI am closer and closer to getting the NC10 for my upcoming spring semester but there are 2 roadblocks stopping me.
First is the Asus EEE PC 1000 HA which has basically everything the NC10 has except the battery is a bit less: “7 hours” vs NC10’s “8 hours.” And it is about $100 less. And it doesn’t have blutooth which isn’t a big deal to me.
And then there’s the Asus EEE PC 1002 HA. And I will admit what got me stuck on this one is its plain beauty. It only has “5 hours” of battery life but the design looks professional and elegant. The specs are basically the same as the other 2.
In short, it seems to me like the NC10 is a compromise between the well-valued eee pc 1000ha and the elegant 1002ha.
I have been torned for days now and I really need some good advice.

MemberYou are forgotting the Right shift key on the Asus… It’s placed at the right of the UP arrow, instead of the normal place… If you write a lot on your netbook, ýou will get mad with Asus… Trust me…

Membergood point about the shift key.

MemberOh ya gone done it now! opened pandora’s box with that question. Never ask that question while the CES show is happening…..
Anyway to help you become even more undecided how about one of these:
Asus Eee PC T91 and T101H
I brielfly had a tablet pc and I really didn’t feel the interface worked very well. Though I have high hopes that Windows 7 will improve on that a lot.
OR
MSI U115, 120, or X Slim 320
OR
ViewSonic NetbooksAlso see my recent posts in “other netbooks” for even more….
I still think the NC10 is a great Netbook… still equal or better than those listed here… The only thing that will get me to replace my Sammy is when someone puts the Nvidia graphics chip in a quality netbook… remmy the 3 year warranty on the sammy in USA Canada is worth something too as you dont have to fork out an extra $50 to $150 for some extended warranty…

MemberI am also looking to get a netbook for school… Naturally, as I will be doing a lot of note taking, a good keyboard is very important to me. When the NC10 was announced I was pretty convinced that it was the one for me, but I decided to hold out and see if anything at CES would catch my eye.
Looks like Asus is revamping their keyboard layout on some of their netbooks…

Looks like a pretty nice keyboard to me, and battery life is supposed to be better. The MSI Wind U115 is also one to keep your eye on…
http://netbookboards.com/msi-wind/ces-msi-shows-off-the-wind-u115/Lots of people really like HP’s new netbooks, specifically the keyboard… I personally don’t care for it, the keys are very flat and find it easy to mistype and lose track of where your fingers are. Also, the mouse buttons are placed a little strangely… I think this is something you need to test out to find out if you like or dislike.
My advice to you would be, go to Circuit City or Best Buy and check out some of the netbooks they have on display. See how the keyboards feel to you, and determine whether or not the Shift key is going to be an issue for you. Also recognize there is ways to remap your keyboard so that the UP arrow actually functions as the shift key. (I know the NC10 isn’t going to be at either of those stores, but I still think it helps to give you an idea of what you might like and dislike in a netbook if you have never actually played with one before.)
I think if you are set on purchasing right now, the NC10 is probably your best bet, great keyboard AND great battery life. If you go with the 1002HA it may be good looking, but the dismal battery life relative to the NC10 could potentially leave you frustrated as well as the shift key. To me the Extra $100 is worth it if you are planning on keeping the netbook for a while.January 9, 2009 at 7:26 am #179143hmoob
MemberWell, I thought a lot about it and I’ve decided to get the Samsung NC10. When it comes down to it, a netbook is about portability and with it’s insanely long battery life, I just can’t skip over it. Looks has to come after price/performance to me.
Thanks. You guys really helped me in deciding this.

Wrong! we already addressed the issue, their website is incorrect… see

MemberAre you are lawyer at all? I don’t think ‘my manual says 3 years’ is gonna fly in court. Every website that sells it says 1 year warranty and you are aware of that. On top of it when you buy it, you don’t see the manual so it’s ‘not a binding contract’.
Sorry but that is not gonna fly, theres no free lunch.

MemberThe included warranty is the legal and binding contract and if they don’t honor it Let me know and we will start a class action lawsuit. I have a couple friends who are Lawyers that would be happy to take the case… Basically because it’s what comes in the box that you paid the money for. the consumer is not required to visit the website or read online sellers warranty statements…
As for “The warranty card included in the box for the computer I purchased says” is all a judge would need to hear and see the original document its open and shut case… If you want to tell me how Samsung would dispute that I would love to hear it. Please don’t tell me they would claim typographical error because that would set a precedent that consumers could then claim their 1 year warranty was supposed to be a 10 year warranty. the knife cuts both ways… Plus everyone that has bought one in the USA and Canada has got the same warranty. So based on the duration and that no recall was issued for unsold products to correct the warranty statement they do not have a leg to stand on.
If they wanted to change it to one year and make it retroactive, they would also have to issue the offer of a full refund to everyone that has already bought one if they do not accept the an updated, shorter warranty statement. of course they could change it by changing the warranty card in new ones that are not yet distributed…January 9, 2009 at 5:43 pm #179134mauwong
MemberA poster in notebookreview.com did call Samsung and was told to fax a copy of the 3-year warranty certificate. If it is verified as legit, Samsung will honor the 3-year warranty. So make sure to hold on to the subject warranty certificte.

Returning to the OP’s question. In regards to battery life, I would have to say that 6 to 7 hours is really achievable with Samsung NC10 in real world. My experience with Asus 1000H was a measly 4 hours and 30 minutes and it is heavier too (but quite sturdy). I also experienced a battery drainage with Asus 1000H (i.e. I left it for a week unused and the battery was down almost by 10% compared to Samsung’s drainage of about 2%). So it is for you to decide whether the premium that you pay for NC10 is worth the extra battery life, BT, lighter weight, 3-year warranty and correctly size and placed right shift key.

MemberI had the NC10 just before Christmas and use it as my main web laptop in the home now. The keyboard is great for typing and like you I was torn between an asus and nc10 – I’m really happy with my choice of the NC10.
