MemberJust curious about what replacement hard drive’s we’ve all been putting in our NC10’s.
SSD or HDD? Size? Effect on battery life? Temperature?I went for a Western Digital WD3200BEVT 320GB. Can’t say i’ve noticed much of a difference in battery life, on full read and write it runs .5W more than the 160GB Hitachi I used to have. I doesn’t run much hotter either. I have a nice size Windows 7 partition now and i’m spending more and more time in it.

MemberI put a 200gb 7200rpm drive in there, then when I bought an X25m for my Thinkpad, I put a 60gb SSD in there instead.
the 200gb dropped the battery life a little, and ran a little hotter. I’ve not had a chance to give the SSD an endurance run to see what happens; I’m also not entirely sure I don’t wish I had the SSD in my quad core desktop instead of the 250gb.

MemberIt would be interesting to see an Intel SSD in our lil’ Samsung to see how things fair. I can only imagine how fast it would be then.

[/quote1233391711]So how much battery life would you say you lost? I reckon I lost around 5-10%. But it was either that or carry external’s around which would drain the battery even more. Also I just downloaded speedfan to monitor my HDD temps and it’s hitting 38C on full read and write.

MemberI’m planning on upgrading the hard drive as well as the RAM. I was just wondering whether replacing either would void the Samsung warranty? Especially since John Lewis extended it too two years for me when i brought it!

MemberUpgrading the RAM (via the hatch) will not void your warranty but upgrading the HDD will, infact taking the back off at all voids the warranty. By the way did John Lewis tell you they had extended the warranty to 3 years? The NC10 warranty is 3 years anyway!

MemberI have fitted a 120Gb OCZ SSD to my NC10 and found that it runs very well with the benefit of no extra heat and no sound. The battery life may be better but I don’t use it for extended periods often enough to say although it is certainly no worse. My only advice on using a SSD on any windows machine is turn ‘off’ defrag in XP and vista as it can damage the drive. Xp and Vista also struggle alot with the speed of SSD’s (tends to stutter) which is why I use windows 7 as it can manage SSD’s alot better. I have just ran the windows experience and found it to be 6.2 so the SSD is fast. Anyone getting faster with a standard drive?

MemberI just bunged 2gb of Kingston in it. Seemed enough of a mod to me, recently got a new 250gb external drive so no need to upgrade there. Just waiting on my pico projector arriving, that should be interesting.

MemberI bunged in a WD Scorpio Blue 500GB and brought the RAM to 2GB too, If the cost of touchscreens come down I’ll get one of those too, and combine it with a hinge mod.
I’ve been searching around for some replacement Internal speakers and having some problems, but to be honest I think im just going to stick to my USB powered speakers as they’re awesome.
