MemberI’ve been thinking about doing a mod on my new NC10 to add a USB port to the back of the machine to allow me to boot from a USB stick. I was thinking about putting it where the slot is by the battery slot so I wouldn’t have to damage the casing.
I already own a Kingsmax USB stick which is nearly small enough if I shave the end off but Im looking for something a bit smaller. The Trancend ones on ebay look pretty good, does anyone know of something smaller? I thought about miniSD cards but they look a bit too big.
Can someone confirm the USB pads on the unused miniPCI connectors work ok? And does someone know of a useable 5v point on the mainboard?
I know I won’t be able to remove the disk while in use and I’ll have to attach a piece of tape to allow me to remove it.
Im also going to put in a FM transmitter,I will let you know how I get on 🙂

Memberdealextreme is one amazing site, so much chinese tat, free delivery, an absurd guns and lasers section. Long may the Eastern export reign.

Memberhow do you plane on adding the usb port, can it be done without soldering?

Memberi will run the leads to the unused PCI-e connector next to the network card, it would need to be soldered (unless you want to make a board to use the network cards slot, but then you’d lose the wifi.)
So, where can I get a 8gb MicroSD card SDHC class 6 for cheap? 19 quid from mymemory or a 4gb one from picstop for only 7 quid…

Memberyeah stick with known companies for memory, stay well clear of anything on ebay.
Take lots of pics too 🙂

MemberI have this:

Memberok, I installed a mini MicroSD card reader and wired in the FM transmitter. Its not quite perfect yet, the transmitter works fine but XP detects it as the headphones being plugged in and now the speakers don’t work.
I tapped the card reader into the PCIE USB points but couldn’t find a 5v source so I used 3.3v instead. It detects the card reader but its not reading the MicroSD cards, possibly due to a bad connection inside. I should have tested it before I broke out the superglue but I didn’t have a card on hand and I wanted to get the thing inside. Silly me! I have a spare reader so I will be testing that before soldering it.
Photos will follow when I finalise the mod….
