Snugs
MemberI purchased the correct 2gb upgrade card, and I was all set to upgrade my nc10 however I could not get the memory hatch open! I made several attempts to unscrew the latch without anyluck. I used a small philips that I usually repair my glasses with to no avail. I dont want to strip the screw, does anyone have any suggestions? To me the screw seems to have been overtightened at the factory.

ParticipantOne other way would be to remove the whole back on the NC10 (you don’t need to remove the memory bay screw to remove the back), no guarantees that there won’t be other screws like that one though.

MemberI’ve heard a few storys from poorly made screws to factory over-tightening but it’s all down to one thing. People using the wrong sized screwdriver. The smaller the screw is the more exact the screwdriver needs to be. Have a look on ebay for a precision screwdriver kit. Buy a kit with chubby handles and not one of those generic skinny silver handled jewellers kits, they’re crap!
You could try pressing down quite hard with the screwdriver you have and giving a small sharp anti clockwise turn on the screw as once the initial bite of the screw is released you would be ok. If your using one of those terrible silver handled jewellers screwdrivers wrap a sock or a cloth tightly around the handle and try again remembering to initially apply more pressure.February 5, 2009 at 3:43 pm #182627hufn
MemberWhat revz said…. 😉 Be very careful not to strip the screw or you will be in serious you know what… It will come right one (well it will take some pressure but will remove) with the right size. Make sure all of the sides hit the screw securely. As they say – the right tool for the right job 🙂

MemberThanks for all your replies. At this point the screw is pretty much stripped. I did have the right tools as I have easily upgrades memory on previous laptops in the past. The screw would not budge as if it were glued.. I dont think I want to open the entire back compartment to change the memory. My dilema now is do send it in for service, return it or just live with 1gb memory? I just ues the sammy for basic checking email, occasional netflix movie..etc.. Replies welcome

MemberGiven your experiences – I’d be inclined to live with 1 GB RAM

MemberBUT…..It will always be in your mind that you want 2G. It will torment you forever until you find a way.
It’s bugging me and it’s not even my nc10.
You could try this but i’ve never done it on a nc10.
I had a stripped screw on a AAO and i got a posi screwdriver and just kept turning and turning until the flat part (head) of the screw broke away from the threaded part. This enabled me to remove the casing and i used the needle nose plier part of a leatherman to grip the tiny piece of protruding screw and turned until it came out. I just had to replace the screw and no damage was done.
It’s risky but i would have to try something.February 6, 2009 at 6:08 pm #182625s162000

[/quote1233943179]I would agree that some people have been using incorrect screwdrivers unfortunately. But the screws are still poor quality and very easy to strip even if you have the correct size screwdriver. For example if you look at the screws underneath of an NC10 that has not been opened you can see that some of the crosses on the heads already have slight chips/scrapes on them. So coupled with the factory over-tightening you’re off to a bad start already and it’s not suprising people have had problems. One member on this forum actually sent his unit back because of the poor quality screws.
Here is my horror story!February 6, 2009 at 7:17 pm #182626Joe

[/quote1233946587]You’re actually right about the glue. A threadlocker is used on these hatch screws to prevent exactly what we are attempting to do. When I removed mine, there were traces of the blue adhesive on the threads. I removed these screws by applying firm (quite a bit) of pressure on a jeweler’s screwdriver and a quick twisting motion. If you’ve butchered the screwheads and still determined to get them out, then a dremel and an easy out bit set would be my suggestion.

MemberI want to thank all the members here for some great ideas! I was able to get the screw out finally! Samsung really needs to post a warning about trying to change the memory. It’s a simple process. The screws are over tightened and very poor quality. I too thought of sending it back, however I brought my blue sammy into work today and asked someone from my tech support dept if he can try loosening it. After about 10 min, he was able to take the screw off insert my 2 gig memory and all it cost me was buying him lunch!! I will never attempt to loosen anymore screws on it ever!
Revz, you were right. I was tormented about not being able to get my new memory card in. So glad this is over. Now I can enjoy my sammy and show it off.February 7, 2009 at 11:06 am #182632revz

Memberi personally cant see any issue with the screws. i used the worst quality screwdriver i owned to open my hatch (it was so bad it actually came with a dealextreme hard drive caddy). As it was the first thing that was to hand. And my screw came out easily, and perfectly undamaged. So i imagine its all about the size u use… as always.

MemberI just installed my Crucial 2GB of RAM successfully too. I was careful and gave propr preassure using a micro philips screwdriver and it worked fine. 🙂

Memberglad to hear you had no problems, guess someone on the samsung assembly line decide to glue mine. That’s all over now.
