Sorry, obvious mistake in my previous post. should be:Blueheaven, thank you! Can you answer my question no 2? (first install software and NC10 does the plug-and-play automatically when it finds the card or first install the card and go through the “install driver” rpocedure?)

I installed the drivers after i installed the card 🙂December 25, 2008 at 12:35 pm #169197zynexiatechMemberWhere did you get the card from and what was the cost as my atheros has died and need a replacement.

December 30, 2008 at 7:33 pm #169198jay_2kMemberI have an N router and i would love to fit one of these bad-boys in it would make it perfect! but i am scared in case i break my nc 10 or if anything goes wrong and i would have void my warranty.
December 31, 2008 at 5:59 am #169200kmart9419MemberDoes the function-f9 still work to disable the wireless when not needed? Not sure if software disabling will conserve battery since the wireless light is still on. Just like the bluetooth right now, only way to turn it off is to right click on bluetooth icon and hit stop bluetooth. Does it save on battery at all when its stopped? I have no idea.
TheRing, Can you answer the fn-f9 question for me. Thanks.
December 31, 2008 at 5:09 pm #169177JCKMemberF9 does still disable the wireless when the Intel 5300 card is installed, I have it in my NC-10.
December 31, 2008 at 6:46 pm #169078lozza69erMemberJust fitted the Dell 1510 half size wireless card today, works just fine.
January 2, 2009 at 8:46 pm #169098TheRingMemberYep F9 still works,
Also on some router/card combos you must ensure wpa2 and aes are selected in the wisfi setup otherwise card will stick at 54mbps
January 3, 2009 at 1:05 am #169201kmart9419MemberYeah, I noticed that. I was originally using wpa/tpik and all i got was 54g. Really weird. The funny thing is, my dell wireles 1500n is the complete opposite, will only get around 27mbps on wpa2.
Switch to wpa2/aes and getting speeds between 135 to 270, averaging around 180.
My dell with the new card averages around 230.
Another thing I have notice is the battery life went up quite a bit. I’m on 60% and the battery meter is showing 4:35 minutes on 3 bars of brightness and bluetooth disabled.
January 3, 2009 at 6:10 pm #169099TheRingMemberI cant speak for any other card bar the 5300 but battery life should increase a little as the card is one part of the centrino 2 brand as such has a very low power consumption lower than the atheros but the gain would probably only be a few minutes or so.
January 5, 2009 at 2:24 am #169202kmart9419MemberThe battery life did go up dramatically. I ran it the whole day today and got an extra hour out of it. Wifi on all day. When I change the adapter power setting to medium to low, battery life goes down accordingly.
As for today’s test, its not scientific, but real world actual usage. I had it on at 1pm, had it off for about 2 to 2 1/2 hours and had it on all day after that. Usage includes mostly web browsing. 1 hour was used to transfer huge files via the ethernet port. It is 9:10pm right now, and my battery shows 18% and 1:19 minutes left.
As for the wireless connectivity, I have the linksys gaming router wrt330n. My speed fluctuates between 135 to 180 on the samsung, and 180-230 on the dell (both have the intel 5300). I guess Dell 15.4 incher has better antenna built in. Another difference is that the dell uses vista. Vista software from intel is completely different from the xp version. That might have something to do with it.
Anyhow, real world usage shows 8 megaBYTES per second about 25 feet away from router. That’s wireless to ethernet.
Wireless to wireless from dell to samsung cut bandwidth in half. Actually, more like 60-70%. Transfer speed dropped 8megabytes to 2-3megabytes per second. I think the router splits the bandwidth and both using the same wireless spectrum interferes with each other.
I’m considering getting a linksys 610n for simultaneous dual band.
One side note, intel 5300 caused my linksys wrt330n to crash 4 times. 3 times while i was testing the two computers. Once was when I was just browsing. I have never had these crashes for 2 years with the dell wireless 1500n and the samsung nc10 wireless used for 2 months. So this is a worrisome since it complete crashes the entire network and leaves my alarm and voip useless.
I had adjusted a few settings in the router and changed my channels. I hope this will fix it. If not, its either a new router or remove the 5300. Im leaning towards getting a new router because opening the sammy is such a pain, especially at the hinges.
January 6, 2009 at 2:25 am #169209martinMemberDoes anyone know the actual differences in power between the 5300 and other cards? I have been googling everywhere but can’t seem to find anything but vague product literature.
January 6, 2009 at 10:31 pm #169100TheRingMemberThats the one pain with wifi combinations if a card does not get on with a router all hell breaks loose, gotta say the belkin n/5300 worked a dream but i know from past experiences that certain combos result in poor throughput and or crashes.
January 7, 2009 at 3:37 pm #169203kmart9419MemberSo far crashing usually occurs after heavy testing, such as changing channels often, which causes a reboot and heavy file transfers between the 2 computers i have with intel 5300. Only one time the router crashed when not testing. That event was the most worrisome.
So far, I have been unable to replicate a crash for 2 days now with general usage. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
Another solution for folks who have router issues is to disable the N band and use the a/b/g band so you dont have to remove the card and reinstall the old one.
