I recently fitted a 5300 (off Chinese ebay dude) and extra antenna from Oxfordtec and connected to the middle connector and I have to say that I’m a little bit dissapoiinted 🙁
I’ve only been testing it about a week or so with my Sky Sagem router – (not a great test I know) and results are bit bit iffy.
It could be down to the router position and my TV, the original card worked well when the router was behind the TV but this card seems to suffer – when in the same room it says it’s connected at 18Mbps !!!
The Sky router is behind the TV as my new TV has a LAN connection so I thought I’d plug it in (something to do with Freesat?) – but will move it to another point.
I was thinking of fitting a 5350 or something better – is there:?
Or has anyone else experienced poorer connections with the 5300?

I bought an aerial that looks like the image (from page 16) above.
1. it does not look like the two aerials that come stock with the NC10
2. it’s about 5 or 6 inches in lengthso i was unsure if it will actually accomplish what i purchased it for…increase signal strength
can anyone confirm that it will boost power for the wifi 5300? and as for me, since it wasn’t long enough, i just stuck it behind the bottom of the screen. i opened up everything and looped it through the hinge where the original 2 aerial go, and left it sitting behind a little behind the SAMSUNG logo at the bottom of the screen (the inside).
i wasn’t supposed to shred something at the tip at solder it onto something was i? because it was a major pain in the butt to open up the screen’s bezel.
November 28, 2009 at 10:49 am #169259jeepers01Participantwyckd – You don’t say if you tested the wifi and what results you get with the aerial connected. Does it improve things?
The aerial is contained in the lead at the opposite end to the connector in the shrouded section and requires no soldering.
Just a thought, but you might get better results by placing the aerial in the vertical section to the side of the screen rather than at the bottom of the display but the aerial you have does seem a little on the short side.
November 28, 2009 at 7:23 pm #169235wyckdMemberoh, when i bought my wifi, i got the wrong one (HP/IBM) that the computer reports “cannot be started”.
so i’m waiting for the DELL version that i bought from ebay…in the meantime since i had half my computer opened, i placed the aerial, so i couldn’t test anything myself.
as for placement, it probably would have been ideal for me to place it on the side, or maybe even horizontally along the webcam space…but when i received it, it was super short so i just placed it at the bottom. oh well.. :

December 11, 2009 at 9:40 am #169236wyckdMemberholy crap…installing the Oxfordtec Aerial was a nightmare.
it was waaaaay too short and trying to get it fit inside the screen’s frame was a major pain in the butt… but i was able to do it… the hinge seems to have difficulty opening and closing and makes a slight “click” noise whenever i open the screen.
as for performance increase…i cannot tell yet until itake my computer to this 1 classroom on campus where i can’t pick up wifi. if i can pick it up with the new 5300 and 3rd aerial… then i will say….pain in the ass was worth it.
December 29, 2009 at 5:36 pm #169117dinoMemberis the third antenna necessary at all? isn’t it the case that 300mbps only needs 2 spatial streams, which is why most n routers only have 2 antennae? or is having three a matter of futureproofing for 450mbps (which needs 3 streams)?

[/quote1263387443]Hi I just bought one and fitted from Ebuyer, to be honest very dissapointed, I had expected to get a far better range… with old NC10 Ath card I was getting say 4 AP’s with new card maybe 4/5 and with Dell PC (old Latitude) I get 9 AP’s…
Then when I tried getting it to do N Draft with my router Dlink N it just wouldn’t have it at all, tried everything thru the forums the lot.
I put on the 3rd Antenna too from Oxford and found this made zero difference…
As a result I am gonna probably switch back and sell 5300 on ebay!
Has anyone found any of the new Netbooks with built in N Draft have a better range???
January 14, 2010 at 12:19 am #169286techguyMemberBe careful about buying these Intel cards off ebay, the market is flooded with fake cards, or early Intel engineering samples.
The main advantage of the latest Intel cards is the lower power consumption and support for the fastest N Draft speed (450mbps, hence the extra aerial connector for 3x 150mbps) , you can adjust the signal power in the driver properties section of the card if it’s not already set to maximum.
To improve the signal strength you will have to install better/longer (higher sensitivity?) aerials inside the laptop, your Dell will almost certainly have better and longer aerials installed running right up round the Dell LCD display, no guarantees this will improve signal strength, only one way to find out. 😉
Some AP also allow you to boost the transmit power of the unit.
The Intel 5300 AGN card I use (stock aerials plus the oxfordtech one) has worked fine for many months now, the difference over the stock Atheros card is better battery life, I find the Intel software/drivers more reliable.
IIRC, I’ve seen a few around on these forums that have performed the aerial mod which involves taking the screen apart to install the new aerials in it.

Thank you for the warning, techguy 🙂[quote1263429152=techguy]

I installed a third aerial (from OxfordTEC) and it didn’t involve removing my screen – the aerial wrapped around the HDD enclosure ending by the LAN adapter. However, I didn’t try my 5300 WLAN with only two aerials, so I don’t have comparative figures for signal strength.[quote1263429152=techguy]

Totally agree. The Atheros card dropped the connection on a fairly regular basis. Since I installed the 5300 the connection has never dropped out.January 14, 2010 at 9:41 am #169287leftyMemberHmm, I just bought a 5300 card off the bay, and my NC-10 just doesn’t recognise it – no ‘new hardware’ pop-up, nothing showing in Device Manager. Have I been conned ?
It calls itself an Intel Model 533AN_MMW, by the way .
January 14, 2010 at 9:51 am #169191TCMuffinMemberWelcome to the forum, lefty 🙂
I bought my 5300 from Digital Fusion and it worked as soon as I rebooted my Sammy.
Btw mine also had the product code 533AN_MMW.
I would open the box and check that the card is seated correctly. Did you add the third aerial?
Have you contacted the seller 😕
January 14, 2010 at 9:56 am #169288leftyMemberCame from Hong Kong -just wondered if there was some other reason – only using the two original aerials at the moment. Do I need the third before it will work ??????
Have replaced the original card and everything is OK. Tried to install 5300 drivers but don’t think that worked….

Oh dear – it sounds as if techguy’s warning is relevant 🙁Have you contacted the seller 😕
