MemberI have just disconnected the fan in my NC10. Not because of the noise but because of the powerdrain. The operating temp. of the cpu is up to 60 degrees Celsius and playing movies the cpu temp goes up to 50 degrees. See how long I dare to keep this up π

Memberhi,
how did you do that ?December 18, 2008 at 6:49 pm #176370soutthpaw
MemberMore like WHY? i think that borders on stupidity, no offense but with everything you have disabled so fat you basically have a brick already… you are asking for trouble…. I got a simple fix… buy a spare battery! then you will have plenty of power and a fully functional netbook

MemberDisconnecting the fan probably voids the warranty.

MemberWell, my warranty was already voided because of changing the speakers. The fan was disconnected internally. Still going strong, no problem yet.
And if someone has to try it – it’s me π I’m getting a sub 7W battery drain as of now and this is with 3-bar brigthness, Wifi on and surfing.
Warning! This is not recommended, just because I’m willing to test that doesn’t mean it’s a very good idea. I’m willing to try however and can share my experiences. If my NC10 breaks down I will let you know but I do not think it will. The cpu gets more hot of course, around 50 degrees Celsius.

MemberThe Dell Mini 9 does not come with a fan. However, the fan is not for the Atom processor, it is for the graphics chip. By reputation the Dell becomes as hot a a firecracker on your lap, but that doesn’t mean it won’t keep working…

MemberHey, there is a loon on Amazon who rates our computer as 1 star saying it is crap and doesn’t even come with a fan…..The way I see it, we are all lucky to have one to disconnect! π

MemberDefinitely one for the hardcore modders only. Don’t try this at home!!

MemberI can now tell you that I have connected the fan again. The ‘puter just gets too hot. And from what I’ve noticed the fan doesn’t draw very much power at all.
Well – I’ve tried it and from experience I can not recommend disconnecting the fan π

MemberAwesome work though. I found your experiment very interesting myself. I’m going to look through the forum now for your speaker mod. THAT sounds cool. Sammy speakers are pretty weak π

MemberSilent Mode?
Press Fn+F8 and here you can change the setting to “Silent Mode”, this means that the fan doesn’t come on until the CPU reaches around 50 degrees Celsius. After setting this you can still go in to the Samsung Battery Manager and set the Customized scheme. This means that setting it to “Silent Mode” with Fn+F8 is not the same as setting the power scheme to “Max Battery Life” in the Samsung Battery Manager. Pressing Fn+F8 and changing to Silent Mode somehow changes the setting for when the fan starts.December 21, 2008 at 3:47 am #176361hef
Memberi would have reconed that with the atom being an intel cpu, it will be well good upto 75 celcius minimum, 100 maximum. so turning off the fan entirely (via severing its connection) shouldnt make much of a difference unless the ambient tem is ridiculously high. if the cpu is only reaching50 when hard pushed with no fan, i dont imagine theres much to worry about unless you plan to have the cpu for more than 80 years.

MemberTrue, but turning the fan off completely became a bit too uncomfortable. The fan does its work well, if turned off completely the keyboard and below gets very warm on the left side.
The best solution I found was to set it to Silent mode which changes the threshold when the fan comes on.[quote1229873622=hef]

Memberahhh i understand now, its not the temp of the cpu that becomes and issue, btu the temp of everything else…
oh well.
tbh, even on full punt mode i couldn;t hear the fan on the ones i;ve played with.

[/quote1229899097]The fan in my Vaio TR5MP stopped working and it bricked itself within minutes. I will keep my fan, its the achilles heel of most laptops/netbooks IMHO.
