Hi guys, this evening I finally got around to choosing a mobile broadband provider (Vodafone) and will connect using it for the first time when I get home from work tomorrow morning.
I haven’t installed anything yet and am hoping it’s all very plug & play,I’ve only gone for a 1GB pay as you go package too, just incase I don’t like it, but fingers crossed everything will be okay.
Looking forward to visiting some of my favorate sites at home instead of using the Library or parents PCs. I’ll let everyone know what I think tomorrow 🙂
February 10, 2009 at 8:18 pm #183330s162000MemberI have the same PAYG Vodafone deal as you I got 1GB of data (usually £15) and a modem for £35. I got it because of the Vodafone signal coverage in the U.K. generally being excellent. I have had it a month and 3 weeks and used it everyday (no major downloading or flash vids though) and have just got through half of the 1GB allowance so it was money well spent – or saved I suppose. The software is very reliable, I have had no crashes. 3G signal coverage in Cornwall is good. Highly recommended from me. Hope you find it liberating my friend!
February 11, 2009 at 11:31 am #183341beachMemberi am in cornwall, i have the 3 network 7gb £25 package. i live next to a mast so that helps. best connection i have got was over 2mbps, average is 1mbps, on bad days it can literally be anything though.
upload is only 55kps maximum capped which is outrageous. this ruins online games playing. i will test the new 7.2mps service later in the year before getting another big contract.February 11, 2009 at 1:01 pm #183337BluebirdNC10MemberI’ve had to swap over to the Vodafone service as well from 3 as the 3 network doesn’t work where I haved moved to.
Then again, the Vodafone signal isn’t even connecting at 3G but GPRS instead. Might change soon if they get permission for a new mast.
February 11, 2009 at 2:02 pm #183332TCMuffinMemberI have the ‘unlimited web bolt-on’ with my 3G mobile phone contract with O2. So, I use my phone as a modem rather than buy a separate contract for mobile broadband.
If you want to try this – check out this thread

[/quote1234364131]you have to becareful, there are terms and condition, when it said unlimited web, it doesn’t mean unlimited… 3GB or 1GB is the maximum… I suggest you check about it
February 11, 2009 at 3:06 pm #183333TCMuffinMemberThank you for that siupiu 🙂
I’ll check my T&Cs. However, it’s most unlikely I will exceed these limits as I only use mobile broadband occasionally – most of my connections are via WiFi.
Don’t those limits also apply to mobile broadband accounts?
February 11, 2009 at 4:24 pm #183343siupiuMemberNO, I did check all available network, they all have limited ‘ unlimited internet’ , I just don’t know why they can call them unlimited when the have limit, something fair usage or what…
if they have limit, why don’t they just tell everyone up to the limit rather than saying ‘ unlimited’ ???
February 11, 2009 at 4:33 pm #183334TCMuffinMemberI agree, siupiu.
Even ‘unlimited’ land-based broadband accounts have ‘fair use’ policies which don’t actually stipulate what is the limit on the account ~:(
Whatever happened to transparency in contracts?
February 11, 2009 at 4:44 pm #183344siupiuMemberThat’s the thing, if they set the limited just like talktalk (40GB), then fair enough, if I used above the limited, i have to pay for it, but if they tell me unlimited, then I suppose i can use more than 100GB per month ( actually I think I only use around 50GB per month)
February 11, 2009 at 4:49 pm #183329jezMemberYep this comes up time and time again and I don’t understand why they are allowed to call it unlimited when it is not. Always worth checking the small print.
February 11, 2009 at 6:15 pm #183339BletchMemberhi all
well here I am connected at my flat to the Voafone network 🙂It basically took 10 mins which I guess is good. The only bad point was when plugging the usb modem in – the progess bar, i wasn’t sure if it had hungcrashed, it filled up several times. No matter though 🙂
Signal strength is only 2-3 bars from my sitting room where I would really want to use it. Oh I’m in Wakefield too.
So overall I’m happy 🙂

Hi TC Muffin,I too use the exact same method of mobile communication via my 3g k800i via the sony erricson pc suite. I rang o2 customer service and said to them that I had returned my o2 mobile broadband dongle because it was rubbish. I informed them that I will also be connecting my ipaq PDA via my phone to get my pictures sent. Anyhow I was told that as long as I do not go wild with using this method that would be OK!!!!!!.
I informed the lady on the other end of the phone that I will be connecting as per o2 instructions for setting up 3g mobile communications for the internet as per the o2 web site..
February 14, 2009 at 11:33 am #183340BletchMemberFor a few hours there I really hated my Vodafone Broadband.
Trying to get to half of my favorite sites resulted in some crappy ‘access denied’ page (parental control bullsh*t). Following links to EASILY remove the parental control at Vodafones ultra unfriendly website had me going around in circles – even after I had registered (to easily remove parental control). Finally finding a FAQ section that told me ways I could remove the parental control, I fould my best bet was to (easily) catch a bus into town to the Vodafone shop, wait 30 minutes for assistance, hand over my Sammy NC10 (not needed) and Vodafone modem and have her remove the sim card thing, tap a few numbers into her computer and there you go, done. See. So what the hell did I get into a flap about? 🙁
