MemberI’m looking to get a NAS set up for my home network. Does anyone have any suggestions about good solutions out there. Looking for the best value for money of course but open to any realistic suggestions. A nice to have would be to also allow printer sharing so I can share storage and my printer without the need for my main desktop to be powered on.
Cheapest I have seen is approx £80 for a 500GB Freecom unit off Ebuyer but would happily spend more for a better performing or stable unit.
Uses would be mostly for backing up, sharing movies and occasional remote file access.
A possible alternative I would also consider is a new wireless router with storage and printer sharing built in – my current Linksys router has neither.November 24, 2008 at 4:05 pm #171086TheRing

Memberwhy not just create a network share partition on your desktop?
means leaving the mahcine on all the time, but will save you a truckload on having a seperate machine for the sake of only 500gb.
for £80 you can get a 1TB sammy spinpoint F1 delivered to your door.

MemberI have a QNAP TS-109 (with 1TB drive) and can definitely recommend it.
It really impacts how you use all your various network-capable gadgets. All my photos and video files are always available for playback on PS3 or Xbox, mp3 files for the Squeezebox (and it runs the SlimServer to control the box), you can kick off torrent and usenet downloads on the box itself, use it as a small webserver, offer FTP to friends etc.
All that and it’s quiet enough to run in the living room because it has no fans. Plus it only draws around 15W of power.
It’s the 24×7 nature of the box that makes it so good. You can always fire up a regular PC and do network sharing but that is hassle. Having something that is always running (but doesn’t guzzle power pushing up your electricity bill) really adds value. I’d say that it is as much of an advance in usability for me as WiFi was.

MemberThanks TheRing I’ll check that NAS out.
@HEF I’m wanting a separate NAS so I don’t need to leave a PC running.November 24, 2008 at 6:43 pm #171087TheRing
MemberMy boss was after a nas drive and after showing hin this one and the reviews he has gone ahead and brought it, although was informed by him after posting this that its not certified for samsung drives apparently the sleep mode causes issues, but is confirmed with maxtor, seagate, and western digital

Thanks for the info – heard some good things about Qnap. Does this allow printer sharing?

MemberActually reading up on the Synology gives good things as it appears it offers the ability to set up web downloads too – I download from Rapidshare so if I can do this easily I could be sold.
I also found the following which offers similar features for the same money but includes the drive:Buffalo LS-CH500L
