N220 whining noise – what is it? It’s not the hard drive.

I can’t think of any other moving parts other than the fan, but the noise doesn’t sound like a fan problem to me. So I’ve posted an MP3 file of it here: http://fanoss.ca/N220/ – note the weird clicking sound part way through as well as the constant whine. Please take a listen and tell me what you think. The other problem is the case has digital locks on it so I can’t run the machine with the case off to see what it is.

P.S. It’s not the hard drive because I’ve already replaced it, thinking that’s what it was (see my previous post).

It could be a noise from the speaker of some sort…

I think you’re right. If you play with the volume control function key combo to increase and decrease the volume it makes that weird pinging noise. I’m just surprised that the sound card or speaker or both make so much noise when sitting idle unless you turn the volume almost completely off – or leave it off.

This was caused by a sound setting in Playback Speakers I made sure “Disable all sound effects” and “Loudness equalization” were unchecked and in Recording “Listen to this device” is unchecked. Not sure which setting was causing the “feedback” but one of these was.
