I am trying to find out the maximum supported ram for the N220.
I have seen plenty of things online to upgrade to 2gb.
I am going to upgrade the netbook to run Windows version to Ultimate so I get access to the 64bit functionality.
Can I put in more than 2gb and have it recognized or is it just a waste?September 4, 2010 at 11:03 am #215992MaxWizMemberHello onekilo
This isn’t an easy question to answer! Samsung don’t list a maximum. Intel don’t list a maximum in the datasheets for the chipset (Intel NM10)…I can find motherboards and pcs with Intel NM10 chipset and 4Gb of ram. This would suggest that 4Gb is the maximum that the chipset can handle but all of these were 2x2Gb.
I suspect that the chipset will take up to 4Gb but that would have to be in two sockets. Your N220 only has one socket, so I would assume it only takes 2Gb. This agrees with Crucial’s memory advisor (not always accurate).
You should question if you would ever need more than 2Gb in a netbook. Your Atom processor will struggle if running many applications at the same time, that is the normal reason for wanting huge amounts of ram.
That said, if you can borrow a 4Gb sodimm (DDR2 PC2-6400) then give it a try, it wouldn’t do any damage. You would need to try after upgrading to 64bit otherwise windows will only see 3Gb.
Let us know if you do give it a go. Some people like to upgrade to the maximum possible even if they don’t ‘need’ the resource.

I think from this – http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=42503 – The CPU claims to be 64bit but says the max memory is 2G.
Seems odd having a 64bit CPU limited to 2GOr have I misunderstood something (not unknown 🙂 ).

The 64 bits refers to the virtual address space and the 2GB max memory is the physical address space (31 bits). If a processor had a 64 bit physical address space you’d need about 18 exabytes of memory to max it out. The main drawback is that to make that memory would consume most of the atoms on the planet.
September 6, 2010 at 2:55 pm #215986TrigMemberOne question, why x64?
September 6, 2010 at 3:09 pm #215985Fred232MemberI’m confused by it all.
“Atom implements the x86 (IA-32) instruction set; x86-64 is so far only activated for the desktop Diamondville and desktop and mobile Pineview cores. The Atom N2xx and Z5xx series Atom models cannot run x86-64 code” from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Atom
I’ll stick with 2G on 32bit, its easier 🙂

December 24, 2010 at 7:24 pm #215994jackhulkMemberHi Onekilo. Did you ever get to try 4GB?
This site claims it can handle 4GB!

December 30, 2010 at 8:48 pm #215987TrigMemberYeah, that site also says it has 2 RAM slots sooo….
December 30, 2010 at 9:53 pm #215995jackhulkMemberOoook, thanks for your input Trig. So has anyone tried a single 4GB or not?
January 3, 2011 at 12:18 am #215988TrigMemberJust pointing out the fact they say it supports 4gb but has 2 slots, so them saying 4Gb could be halved if they seem to have doubled the number of slots it has…
January 13, 2011 at 5:02 pm #215989TrigMemberJust ordered a 4gb stick, should arrive tomorrow.
I’m only running 32bit Win7 so if the machine does see all of it the OS wont use it all so I might boot some sort of 64bit Ubuntu or similar off of a thumb drive to test.January 18, 2011 at 10:11 am #215990TrigMemberFor those that have thought about trying this.

January 18, 2011 at 11:16 am #215982SammyNetbookMemberWell, thanks for trying and reporting back. Shame it didn’t work 🙁
January 18, 2011 at 1:28 pm #215991TrigMemberIndeed, nobody else seemed to want to take the leap and try it so I figured why not, plenty of other machines laying about that can stick the RAM in so its not like it was a waste…
