Hello to all, moderators and new users alike. I need advice. Temptation is swimming around me like sharks and i know i will inevitably succomb, hence why i joined the site, rare for me.
I have a predicament to deal with. I am poor, not miserably poor, no credit cards etc to deal with, just need to be careful with money as i don’t get paid much because apparently i dont work enough. I am too busy working on my own projects you see. And for these i need inspiration, function and dependability – which i think is why i like the NC 10. That and this forum – thats for sure! I live in France but have a UK bank account with just about enough money to buy an NC 10 from amazon and on the 26th Feb someone i know is coming to meet me in Holland. The price in France is around £350 online (50 more) but there is a new deal giving a second NC 10 half price. Hence i believe that very soon the price in the UK could tumble too, this is in addition to reading on here about the imminent release of other things! I don’t know when i will next be able to get a UK version (French keyboard = not happening for me) and i understand only Clove and overclockers are the two exportable sites available, however using them would discount the benefit of any saving. I am from Yorkshire and i think it is affecting by purchasing decision.
Onward. So i ask myself do i need one of these!!! Well truth is, No. I have a sony Vaio VGN-A417S 17″ laptop that although has become a desktop – size and battery contraints – does the purpose of running XP and a few games now and then before slowing up big time. The battery has in fact beccome so constrained that it resembles a brick – useless (it doesnt work now)! So i have been unable to sample portability for some time – i teach – and could use a netbook for carrying work around and doing the odd thing while sat in the Boulangerie… inspiration. In 11months or so me and the mrs are thinking of going travelling too and that was another big reason for looking at netbooks, compatability with being on the move is very important. The upgrades, mods and safety of knowing about this site make me sure that i will purchase an NC 10 but the issue is, when? It could be by the end of tonight – but i am nervous – if this doesn’t work out my returns options could be a minefield. The mrs is being distinctively Frnech on the matter – unhelpful. So to the forum for the very first time i turn…..
…anyone there? 😉
ps. if i do buy – should i go for buying the 2GB RAM at the same time (more expensive in France) or do i need to know which build of NC 10 i have first?
February 11, 2009 at 6:09 pm #183411fcatMemberHonestly, sounds to me like you dont NEED one but WANT one, also sounds like due to work and money etc you cant really afford one!
Seriously, think about it in details as to whether you really NEED one now or whether you can get by without one, maybe have another look in 10 months time before you go travelling!!

Welcome to the forum EmbarkIf money is tight – buy it when you need it!
Apart from anything else, the netbook market is changing so quickly that who knows what will be available at the end of the year 🙂
My friend bought an Acer Aspire One from Tesco just after Christmas and today the price of the same netbook was reduced by £50.

I’d recommend waiting a little longer. As soon as the NC20 and NC10 special edition are launched, you are sure to see the price drop of the standard NC10. Since you already have a laptop, it’s not as if you’re doing without a computer either.February 11, 2009 at 10:00 pm #183410CbarMember[quote1234389234=Embark]I have a sony Vaio VGN-A417S 17″ laptop [/quote1234389234]
Buy a new battery, it’s the cheapest option, not the most portable but doable.February 11, 2009 at 10:37 pm #183408adatay92MemberWelcome to the site Embark
February 12, 2009 at 9:22 am #183405jezMemberWelcome to the site!
I agree that from reading your post it sounds like you could wait a bit longer. I always think these things feel right when the benefit of having one comes into line with the amount you wish to spend. And then you just know to go for it! This point is different for everyone so it is very hard to make any suggestions.
The NC10 is a great little machine though and its size and portability will make it a great travel companion. But if you aren’t going just yet maybe you should wait until nearer the time.
I think that prices will come down but to be honest my reading around still puts the NC10 in a strong position. Some of the new contenders aren’t getting great first reviews and magazines such as PC Pro still have the NC10 on the “A-list”. But who knows!
I don’t think you’ll be disappointed by the NC10. Good luck with the purchase 🙂
February 17, 2009 at 11:16 am #183412EmbarkMemberAn update/
Thanks for all of your replies, i realise that it is a case of more wanting one than needing one – but sometimes as you said Jez ‘then you just know to go for it’ …..well i did. And i think mayube what people didnt understand from my extremely long post was that i would ned up paying the same price to have an NC10 delivered to france – instead i will be picking up a new black one in amsterdam next week sometime at a price i have decided suits how i want to go about the next few weeks and months – i believe there is a motivation in technology – somewhere – to continue discovering and doing things! Agree also that the proce may not drop considerably – anyway its the past now.
@Cbar – a new battery for the sony would cost £150 and if you saw the size of it you may udnerstnad – it is a replacement desktop – 17 inch screen. Will head back onto the forum after my trip to amsterdam, a little rest before all this information to get to know! Thanks again.
February 17, 2009 at 11:18 am #183413EmbarkMemberas for the travelling – well lets just say there is no point taking brand new technology away travelling (in my opinion) as i would prefer to be knowledgeable of it – in addition nothing ever comes back so would like to get some use from it too! 😉
March 2, 2009 at 10:37 pm #183414EmbarkMembergot it! time to play tomorrow.
