Let’s compile a list of software that everyone feels enhances the experience on the NC10.
TwoFingerScroll – Let’s you use two fingers to scroll on the page (like a Mac) and will also give you several other “touch” options on the trackpad. Thanks to jonbad for his link.*RocketDock – Mac-esque application dock. Highly configurable, this will allow you to create stack folders, and minimize to the dock. Will allow you to remove the taskbar from appearance.*Y’z Dock – Smaller memory footprint compared to RocketDock, but doesn’t have the extensions that RocketDock has.*Launchy – Allows you to use a keyboard shortcut to an “instant” run command. Very dynamic with user plugins, and small footprint.*MiniMe – Minimizes applications to a single icon in the system tray. Or TrayIt! which allows you to minimize each application to their own icon. This will let you save that precious taskbar space!*MirandaIM – Very low footprint IM client, doesn’t “skin” natively and probably the hands down most customizable option out there.*AutoHotKey – Let’s you setup macros to replace functionality of keys – I personally use my capslock as the minimize button. Very customizable, and you can find scripts online.
If you know of any others, feel free to post them. I’m trying to avoid things like browsers/AV/etc because those are generally personal choices as everyone has a favorite. Note that all of these are free – please don’t suggest something people have to pay for!November 25, 2008 at 5:16 pm #171370jonbadMemberGood post idea Dougp – I’m very grateful to you for the Rocket Dock application.
I don’t really know of many other particularly useful to the using of the NC10 applications
Maybe add TweakUI to the list?
Also with respect to Rocket Dock – there seem to be a few “docklets” available such as
Show/Hide taskbar – enables you to toggle the taskbar so that you don’t bring it up by accident when hovering near the edge & clears up desktop area.
http://rocketdock.com/addons/docklets/6728Shutdown Button on Rocket Dock – so you don’t have to keep going to the start menu to shutdown.
http://rocketdock.com/addons/docklets/6818Incidentally, I know on the Rocket Dock site there are more than one version of the above two items, but the two I’ve linked are the ones I found worked best after a few minutes of trial and error.
Hope this post is relevant to your Thread Dougp.
November 25, 2008 at 5:54 pm #171377NcssryEvlMemberAn alternative to Rocket Dock (since it says it doesn’t support 64 bit) would be YZ Dock. If run in compatibility mode, it works in 64 bit versions of Windows (Vista and XP x64). While 64 bit isn’t an issue here, it also uses significantly fewer resources.
Task Manager shows Rocket Dock using 8.6MB. It shows YZ using only .67MB

Good point, I’ll add it in there but I do want to note, there’s a lot of functionality in Y’z Dock that’s missing compared to RocketDock. Looks like Y’z needs to be looked at as only an application launcher.

Why?Your running Vista with 2gb ram. And still no programs? What is the reason about that?

[/quote1227641812]Mostly because those are all personal opinion. I might prefer to run Avast, but you could prefer Nod32 or AVG – or I can prefer WMP and you like iTunes, Winamp or Foobar. Then we’re going to have this huge list of apps that would really overshadow the ones that are truly handy and improve our experience. If we want to get a list going of common applications out there, we can do that also – but we’ll need to keep it to freeware stuff.

Yah, I love that website – I have their apps on my keychain drive. They’d be a perfect compliment to the smaller SSD netbooks.November 27, 2008 at 1:17 pm #171379SamuelMemberTheir apps are well chosen too – if you were doing a compilation of top freeware apps then nearly all the ones that PortableApps have repacked would be there.
Even though they’re designed for things like USB sticks and such, they are still fully functional if you just put them on your HDD.
Plus once installed you can copy them to and from storage media and they remain fully functional when run from the media. Handy if a friend sees something they like – just copy the directory to a USB key or memory card and it works! Or even bluetooth file transder the directory across to the other portable. Sweet.
A great idea – I tried to donate to PortableApps but their Paypal button just didn’t seem to work for me.

Dual screens make moving files a lot easier…
November 29, 2008 at 11:37 am #171371jonbadMemberJust found this little app.
Compatible with Windows XP and Vista, it is a tool for arranging windows which I believe is a feature Windows 7 will have.
Essentially if you drag a window to the top of the screen, it maximises that window, to the right, it maximises the window to the right half of the screen, to the left maximises to the left half of the screen, drag back to the middle, restores its original window size.
On the link, there’s a little video which shows you what I’m on about!
