Hi Rsaeire,
Thanks for sending me the PM. I managed to d/l the sameple and tried it on MPC-HC as minardif1 suggests (Thanks minardif1 – good tip!) – it really plays without dropping frames! Amazing quality – though CPU uages is around 50-65% on the Atom. Tried on TMT and very smooth too with similar CPU usage.
MPC-HC still seems to use the Arcoft decoders for MKV’s that I tired, and performance on some videos (mainly MKV) not as good a TMT.
TMT does not have any statisical views to see performance, unless there is some kind of debug mode. It’s really basic!
I’ve not tried the other video you suggest, but will give it a go later.

I eventually downloaded TMT 3 and found that its about as informative as PowerDVD, ie. not that informative at all!
Its funny how an open source program, such as MPC HC, albeit based on Microsoft’s MPC, can be better than pretty much any other media player available and offers so much more than most people even need. Hopefully MPC HC will eventually support the Broadcom card and be able to provide menu access for HD DVD and Blu-ray movies, but i’d say that won’t be for quite some time; if at all for the HD DVD/Blu-ray menu access.
The Broadcom card is proving to be quite the little performer, especially as it appears to work with mini PCI-E slots that are only capable of supporting USB connectivity. While more and more netbooks are being released with other HD capable solutions, such as ION, the Broadcom card is such a cheap and easy option for those of us with either a netbook or laptop incapable of supporting full hardware acceleration.
October 17, 2009 at 12:37 am #202494RsaeireMemberI left a post on the XBMC in relation to lilydreamy’s progress with the 2nd mini PCI-E slot and the fact it was working successfully over USB. Given what Davilla, one of the devs working on bringing Broadcom support to XBMC for the Apple TV, said, it looks as if the 2nd mini PCI-E slot is in fact using PCI-E x1 connectivity as opposed to USB 2.0.

[/quote1255778610]N140 is not a good choice if you want BC decoder mod for 2 reasons.
1. stock wifi card is half size
2. it has a extra pci slot but i don’t see a socket.

There isn’t a spare slot for that HD Accelerator card. There does appear to be a place where a 2nd slot would go to the left of the wireless card. I have a pict of the inside that shows this but don’t know how to post it.-Ursa
[/quote1254427684]I don’t have a NC10 SE (Special Edition) to confirm if the 2nd slot actually works… found a pic on another forum.
I plan to take out the Wifi card to see if this works. I’m mostly desk bound on a LAN, and have a 3G and WiFi USB dongle.
Should be getting the card tomorrow or Sat.
[/quote1255815958]It seems to me that I have the special edition you mentioned, it has 2 mini PCI-E slots

the 2nd is used for WiMAX card

I would like to use this occasion to raise a question: I just got my NC10 back from support, and wifi is not working. I thought that maybe the guy did not fix in the proper manner antenna cables. May I ask you to confirm whether the configuration (1st picture) is correct? (black above, white below)
October 17, 2009 at 10:06 pm #202639banzaiMemberHi HekatonKheires,
It appears your Wifi cables are the wrong way round! The White should be above and Black should be below.
Try swapping them around to see if it comes to life!
Do you have much WiMAX coverage in your country? They have not really started using this in the UK yet, still trailing the technology.
October 17, 2009 at 10:44 pm #202587lilydreamyMemberyes.. white cable should on top and black on below
swap them and you should be good to go..October 17, 2009 at 11:29 pm #202673HekatonKheiresMember[quote1255821054=banzai]

[/quote1255821054]Banzai,
followed your suggestion, but that did not help. Probably I will need to check better the contacts etc.
I am using WiMAX in Moscow center. In average I have 5Mbps (max is 10) coverage and bittorrent can maintain 300-400 kbps rates; I got higher values as well, but can’t remember peaks reached. Apart the speed, enough for browsing, I have to say that better connection is provided by the windows: maybe fixed receiving antennas are located the same way as it happens with cellular network. Monthly fee is around 20 EUR/month.
October 18, 2009 at 12:58 am #202588lilydreamyMemberi am sorry..when i saw this i couldn’t resist .. i had to post this.. ^^
How many N120 user do we have in this forum? ^^

Ahhh good news!! I thought this would be the case, hence asking to try it in the 2nd slot! 😉 I guess it’s not USB powered after all!? Maybe the stock wifi card doesn’t work here because it’s switched off by default, and the motherboard doesn’t have the ability to “turn on” the wifi in slot 2? (when I say turn on, I mean enable the card to send/recieve NOT to power on).So, I should now be able to buy a 802.11n card to replace the stock card, AND have the HD broadcom card installed also!! Woohoo!
Only thing to make this even more perfect… a mini PCI-e card with wireless n support, AND HSDPA built in! Now that would be amazing! HSDPA, wireless n and HD video playback! The ultimate netbook! 🙂
[/quote1255714899]you know what Kazmire.. i wouldn’t think about trying HD decoder in 2nd slot if you did not mention it ^^
In a way, credit goes to you too.. ^^
enjoy your n120..(i mean super n120)[/quote1255949130]
Thanks lilydreamy! 🙂
I’m really pleased you did try it, and as a post had mentioned since, it seems that the 2nd slot is in fact PCI-e x1 rather than USB 2.0! This is excellent news.
I’m going on holiday next week, and on my return I shall be buying the upgrades! 🙂
Loving the post about the 100 broadcom cards by the way. Only issue is, I’m in the UK so would be a pain having to ship it to me afterwards?! Plus having to pay import tax on it?!
October 19, 2009 at 3:31 pm #202589lilydreamyMemberHi Kazmire..
have a nice vacation and report back with your super charged n120
October 19, 2009 at 3:40 pm #202640banzaiMemberKazmire,
You can get a card on ebay UK for less than £20. Go here. I suspect they’ll sell a few more than usual now!
October 19, 2009 at 8:06 pm #202495RsaeireMemberI received the Broadcom card and installed it in my Dell Inspiron 9400 (Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 CPU). I decided to run several CPU usage tests with and without using the Broadcom decoder. I played a scene from each movie and measured the lowest and highest CPU usage during playback in MPC HC. All files are being read from a SATA hard drive connected to a USB hard drive reader.
Blu-ray
Cars (H.264) – CPU usage (without Broadcom decoder) = 51-55%

Also can anyone recommend a USB Wifi Dongle?
Thanks,
