hi all, im about to fly 50 hours over a three week period so i went and bought myself a swankie sammy nc10. great bit kit, i’m not exactly a computer genius so all my music and bits and bobs went on with an external hard drive rather than this network file transfering whadyicallit carryon.
my problem is with games that need the disc to run. in particular civilization 3. thought i could just copy all the discs on to the hard drive then install it from there which works, but it still asks for the disc. then a bit googling got me a program called magicdisc which makes a virtual cd or whatever.but.. it keeps telling me it cant verify the original or authentic disc. which i have but obviously cant give it. thinking about an external dvd drive but surely that would reduce battery life and isn’t exacly practical in cattle class airways!
can anyone help?
Thanks, Brian.
January 14, 2009 at 1:19 am #179685BeckyMemberHi Brian and welcome to the site.
Unfortunately, some games incorporate anti-piracy measures which prevent them from running using a mounted image like you are doing with MagicISO.
Also, make sure that you have the disk mounted for the game you wish to play, as a lot of games will refuse to run if they can’t see a disc (virtual or otherwise).
Though I can’t suggest links due to forum policy, do a google search for noCD cracks for the games you are having trouble with. These are files which replace the game executable and remove the anti-piracy protection and CD requirement and are often used by people with legitimate software when they can’t use the CD.
January 14, 2009 at 10:44 am #179686hanwellmikeMemberI have found and used some of these no cd’s cracks myself and a few have worked. But it is extremely important you virus check these small executables before you run them. I picked up a virus from one and wasted several hours removing it.
I tried to make an iso copy of Age of Empires 2 using CDburnerxp and had the same problem. I have found a no cd crack on the Net but have not yet tried it as I am nervous about getting a virus on my new Sammy.
If you find a solution to the Civ 3 problem please let us know as I was planning to load that game soon.January 18, 2009 at 2:05 pm #179688mrMechanixMemberive tryed every nocd patch i could find and every other file i could find, all were virus free according to mcafee, still doesn’t work though. gave up and went and bought an external dvd drive. and… it still wont work damn it. lt loads on and all the files seem to b there but it just wont start. the icon changes to a spinning cd and the drive is spinning but does nothing. its even in task manager but nothing comes on sceen i give up.
does anyone have any suggestions on a game that works on he sammy and is along the same lines as civ?
January 19, 2009 at 9:43 am #179684jezMemberBuy it on Steam? Check first it can be played in Steam offline mode (I think all games can?).
Its £2.99 or maybe you can register your existing key and download it free (as per HL1).
January 19, 2009 at 5:30 pm #179687ParodyMemberCiv 3 is listed in the Games that DON’T run on the NC10 thread; it apparently doesn’t like the NC10’s native resolution.
January 20, 2009 at 1:40 am #179689mrMechanixMembercheers folks. not been a complete waste of time, learned loads about the netbook what it can and cant do. downloading patch files and creating imaginary disks was way above me 3 weeks ago so well chuffed when it turned out that civ3 just doesn’t work and its not just me bein an idiot. i’ll be hacking nasa next lol.
still looking for a different game for on the plane though, leave on saturday. whats the best strategy game that works on sammy? i’m a bit behind the times so i’m look ing at all these games and scratching my head. bought civ because it was the only one i knew was goin to be good having played civ and civ2 a long, long time ago. does anyone remember a game called elite2 frontier? it was a space ship based game. is there anything similar but obviously a bit newer.
god i’m feeling old.
thanks again, brian.February 5, 2009 at 10:27 am #179690PVAMemberHi,
As CIV addict, I made a try on my NC10 and here’s below a way to run CIV3 (thanks for the CIV forums.) :
1-Install the legacy products
2-Install the nocd “patch”
3-update your ini file (I tried Play the world extension): ptw.ini. Should work with conquest one.
Add the following entries (I put these lines after the voice attribute):
KeepRes=1
Refresh=60
Video Mode=1024Your CIv 3 will start using 1024×768 screen resolution with a refresh rate of 60hz (take care of the refresh rate).
Unfortunately, I did not found how to run a windowed CIV and then this is not possible to play it!.
Is there a way to extend the NC10 resolution to 1024×768?
Cheers,
Pascal -
