MemberRead on the acer website about a few peeps who installed macosx on their system. Read about the oddities and tweaks needed but going to give this a whirl to see if its possible.

MemberIt’s posible I’m sure as all the netbooks are running similar systems plus teh atom processor etc. The difficulty lies in Mac OSX using some higher bit thingy or other (lol) and so you’ll need to use a modified version of OSX. Also the major pain is the functions stopping, so the WIFI for instance and even the USB ports!
I’m sure they’ll be fixable but the wifi might require a change of wifi card I think to be compatible with OSX.
I’ve seen some Youtube videos of OSX running on the NC10 already, before I’d even got mine so perhaps somewhere out there is a wiki or site which details any progress already made. Would be interesting to find out how you get on as this is exactly what I was thinking of doing to mine when I first got it!(though now I’ve just settled for RocketDock and hidden taskbar lol so it looks like a mac!)

MemberI’m sure I, like many who have open this thread, have been scouring the internet looking for a specific solution for the NC10 platform instead of a lent one.
I’m on my 3rd netbook (Wind – rubbish battery & tad bulky, 901, too fiddly, annoying 4gb SSD useful for nothing) and have now finally settled for the NC10 for a number of reasons, mainly its drive size, keyboard & possible OSX hackability.
Using the intel 945GSE chipset, it should respond in a similar way to the wind, which, it seems according to the community, everything INCLUDING the sound outputs via headphone jack working. I’m unsure if a workaround for using the standard wifi card has been developed.
Our basis seems to be the MSIwindosx.iso (found on the pirate bay torrent site) and continue from there. My copy should have downloaded by the time I get home.
I know others have completed an install, but it all seems a bit vague.
Questions about its compatibility start here:
-Is the Atheros wifi card any more compatible out of the box (I know some older g4s used this)?
-Can we get the sound working out of the headphone jacks? (there was a scrip to be run for the Wind that solved this)
-How will other areas such as USB / LAN / Fn functions respond.I’m happy to investigate & post my finding here with a few images if possible.

MemberBarney, when you attempt to install this – please let me know if it works by installing to a USB drive. If it does, I’d be more than willing to install it to a USB drive along with Linux also, so that I don’t have to jack with my MBR more than I need to.

Memberwhat you need to look for for intel compatibility out of the box is kalway or iatkos (easy install) i wont go into why or where as thats down to users. Install from usb is unlikey from what ive read as you need to run the utility for partiting from the disc then swap out.
The atheros card is not compatible and currently there is a dell or intel card used, the new macs utilise a draft n intel card so should be compatible.
i wouldnt keep it on there i just want to see if it can be done and get all working, but for me windows 7 comes first

MemberWhat i’ve read about is that OSX was running.
But no wireless (only cards with a Broadcom chipset will work, so Dell 1490 will work).
No sound via headphone jack.November 25, 2008 at 10:08 pm #171176barney91
MemberSeems to be installing with no hitches. I’ll try to provide a step by step with images.
Using a USB cdrom interface and MSIwindosx.iso as planned.
P.S. I have an out of the shop spec UK machine using the original hard disk config on 2 partitions. This is going on the 2nd partition leaving the windows instillation intact.

MemberCompleted install (pics to follow, its late).
Used this guide:
http://www.netbooktech.com/2008/10/13/guide-to-installing-os-x-on-lenovo-ideapad-s10/
Can confirm, Wind sound fix not working as per:
http://forums.msiwind.net/mac/headphones-easy-switch-setup-detailed-how-icons-t4871.htmlWorking:
Bluetooth
External Speaker sound (with Fn volume up/down)
Webcam
USB (only with device in on boot)
Battery monitorNot working:
Headphone jacks
LAN
Wifi (not tried any fixes yest but no one is reporting any success with this)I have got the dual boot working without harming my original XP and recovery image instillations, selectable menu via Darwin booter on power up. SO this seems a safe viable option for people to have a try with. I’m sure you’ll all agree that we deserve some devlopment as with the wind.
Lets keep this thread going and get some things happening!

MemberWell done Barney91, keep up the good work! I fear the WIFI will require a different MAC-patible card.
Those annoying headphone jacks are a pain in the arse lol.
Am sure LAN can be fixed.
USB am sure again this can be rectified but not the end of the world if not, at least it works! Thanks for the clear write up too 🙂

MemberThanks Jonbad, only took a few hour or so.
My issue is that I’m not a coder. I can follow instructions well, so taking the working bits across the web and brining them together for the new and currently small NC10 community is what should be done. This, as I’m sure we are all aware from the quality of our product will grow.
Again I’ve found very little specific information, but want to provide a base for people to continue thier work on this from.
As a result I will create a fresh tutuorial thread (if the adminitrators adhere to kick this off rather than intructions being found at the arse end of this one.
Hopefully from there some of the well gifted sudo code chaps can get LAN / Sound / USB stabilisation working so we can ditch XP and have a true OSX86 on our hands!

[/quote1227703618]Please start a new thread or any half decent article is welcome to a spot on the front page. Perhaps a combination of both as a thread post can be maintained. Anything for the front page can be added here.
Whatever you prefer – just let me know and we’ll make it happen!

MemberNice job. I’ve installed Mac OS X on a separate drive, but haven’t dual booted yet.
Since WiFi doesn’t work with the standard card, I’m waiting to either get a compatible card (like the Dell 1490) or might wait to see what “N” card ends up working for both. I did get it working with a external Air Link 101 USB card (AWLL6080), but don’t want to carry it around…

[/quote1227794163]No probs Barney! Having learnt that installing OSX on unsupported hardware is not approved by Apple and not technically legal (although I realise it is a grey area) I will just say that I can’t support/condone it. Sorry for being a bit boring in that respect but I have ultimate responsability for this site.
Of course I don’t mind people discussing what they are up to and what works etc but sharing details on where to source the OS etc will result in swift moderation – I’m sure everyones can understand why I have to take that position!
I’d be very grateful if you take any edgy discussion to email if needs be 🙂
Thanks!

MemberYes agreed. I’m sure that people will be experimenting only, and if they are really enjoying the MAC experience then they will go and buy Apple approved hardware to do so. 🙂
