My C drive is currently 143 gig after merging c and d together with hte recovery partition 6 gig making 149 gig.
I thought there was a 160 gig disk fitted so where is the extra 10 gig ?
Basically the hard disk manufacturers use decimal values (giga) whilst the operating system on your computer returns binary values (gibi).
So for a Gigabyte the drive manufacturers go by 1,000,000,000 bytes,
whilst the OS goes by 1,073,741,824 bytesThe difference is 73,741,824 bytes or around 74 Megabytes. So times that by 160 (the size of the drive) and you get 11,958,691,840 bytes or almost 12 Gigabytes. Which is where your missing space went.
wow, some big numbers there.
From your explanation then am i correct in saying that i have not in fact lost anything and that the hard drive IS the correct size of 160 gig (manufacturers) which is equal to around 148 gig (operating system).

That’s right your hard drive is the correct size.Also as the size of hard drives increases the discrepancy also increases, so for example 1TB drives are shown by the OS as being only ~931GB. In the past with smaller hard drives it may have been less noticeable.
There is also a small amount of ‘slack space’ to be taken into consideration. Under NTFS the cluster size is 4k, so unless a file fits exactly in multiples of 4k you will loose a little bit on each file. It doesn’t really matter these days with huge hard drives, but back in the days of my first 52 Mb hard drive it did.
