MemberI use my NC10 in bed and on the sofa a lot and needed some kind of tray or desk to put it on for maximum comfort. I also needed mouse support as I use my VX Revolution 95% of the time.
I was surprised at just how few quality options there are available to meet these requirements. I was also annoyed at how large they all are – there appears to be nothing in this market created for netbooks.
I was initially tempted by one of these:

With the optional Mouzpad:

Several users had reported that it didn’t lock in place when unfolded however and as the NC10 is considerably lighter than regular laptops, I was worried it wouldn’t stay flat.
I eventually settled on one of these, which I have just placed an order for:

I went for the optional drawer instead of the cup-holder.
It’s more than I wanted to spend, but I love the fact that you can adjust the angle, it has side room for a mouse and the build quality seems good. I came across a few cheaper plastic varieties on eBay and such, but they didn’t look very sturdy. Saw some other wood versions on eBay too, but they were Asian imports sold from the US and I was concerned about the potential quality.
I’ll post some pics when it arrives – hopefully within about a week, but maybe longer with the New Year in the way. In the meantime, I’d be interested in seeing if anyone else uses a lap tray/desk thing-a-ma-jig. ๐

MemberFor anyone in Ireland, Dunnes stores have a tray with fold up legs similar to Becky’s “laptable” which while not as fancy does the job for just รขโยฌ12!

MemberI use an empty three-ring binder (hard cover) that I found laying around the house. It’s very lightweight, keeps my Sammy at a good angle, and allows the air to circulate much better than when I had it just sitting on my lap. I keep my mouse inside the binder when not in use.

Looks like a well made product good find! I use a book to rest Sammy on but I can see the appeal of a table like that (love the drawer!) I don’t think i’ll get one though as I imagine my girlfriend will get ideas about breakfast in bed every day……

MemberMy laptable arrived today, the company didn’t dispatch it until yesterday as they were closed over the Xmas & New Year period.
First thing I noticed was how big and sturdy it is. Definitely a very solid, good quality construction. It does dwarf the Sammy a bit, but I like how any attached dongles/cables etc are completely safe from being accidentally knocked because it’s so wide. If you have another laptop with up to a 15″ screen you can use it with this too.
The adjustable angled surface goes quite high making for a comfortable typing postition and the NC10 sits at a good height to minimise neck strain.
The legs actually make it quite tall, so I’ve been sitting with them folded under. The desk isn’t as heavy as you might expect and so this is perfectly comfortable on my lap. Haven’t tried setting it up in bed yet.
The side section (for using a mouse) isn’t huge, but is perfectly adequate for a laptop mouse and I can easily move the pointer all over the screen without having to re-position the mouse. Good tracking surface too, no need for a mousemat.
The draw is a handy feature. Not deep enough to store a mouse, but holds cables and my memory stick and other (small) bits and bobs. Definitely worth the extra fiver instead of having the default cup holder.
This is not exactly a portable accessory, but it’s a good mini-desktop which is pretty useful for anyone wanting to use their netbook on the sofa or in bed for more than a few minutes at a time.
I will post some photos a little later. ๐

MemberOK, here’s a couple of pics, first with the Sammy flat on the unit and the drawer open:
And this is the table at maximum elevation, there are four different angles to choose from:

MemberHi, thanks for the pics.
Can I ask, could I change the top to lift from the other side?
The reason I’m asking, is because I’m left handed, so would want the mouse on the left of the table.
If the lift is only one sided, then I couldn’t use either the lift up part, or the mouse space.
Apart from that, I really like the look of this table, but if I can’t use a mouse, there’s not much point in me buying one.
ThanksJanuary 7, 2009 at 6:54 am #177681emeowww
MemberYou could try this, it’s called the “Stable Table”. Been in Australian market for over 15 years lol.

[/quote1231362330]No need to change anything, the company sells a version for left-handed people too. It’s exactly the same, but with the angled and flat sections swapped. On the order page, you simply select the model you require and at the bottom of the form is the option for a left or right handed version. ๐

MemberFYI, also available at Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk:
etc

MemberCheers jez, I saw those ones on Amazon.com but they weren’t available in the UK. Gives our friends across the pond some more options though.
I should point out that the laptable available via Amazon.co.uk is not configurable and you only get the basic version which is for right-handed use and comes with the cup-holder. I wanted the optional drawer, which is why I bought from the company directly.
