MemberOkay, it took me a while but I finally figured out the CPU/GPU issues regarding Intel and Nvidia. Bottom line, Intel is using old technology in their GMA945 and 950 graphics processors, and will use considerably more watts for this limited improvement, so the N280/GN40 is not really that big a deal (see quote and links below). However, the Ion chipset from Nvidia will pair the Atom N280 with NVIDIA’s GeForce 9400-based chipset, a much more advanced graphics processor. According to NVIDIA, the ION will ship this summer with full 1080p video with Blu-ray, DirectX 10, Aero Glass, Flip3D, and full Windows Vista premium support. The most significant concern is whether or not Intel will block, through pricing or the courts, Ion from coming to the market. As an insurance step, Nvidia is developing an Ion2 chipset for the Via nano processor.

Bottom line: The N280/GN40 is probably not worth waiting for, but the N280 or Nano/ion pairing is. I have been trying to get a handle on all of this for a while, so please post if I have made any errors or you have a different opinion. Thanks.

“It looks like the new Atom with the Integrated GPU will still only be a DX9 part. The GPU that will be going side by side with the 32nm Atom pineview will be none other than the GMA950, the same underperforming GPU that you find in the 945GSE chipset but shrunk down to 45nm and with a higher clock.â€
