MemberHi – first time poster here. This forum seems very informative so hopefully someone can help with this question.
If I install 2GB of RAM and upgrade the OS to Vista will I see much of an improvement in running games on the NC10? Im not expecting to play Crysis on it, the only game im really interested in playing is Football Manager 2009. Ive read a few posts which say that if you install Vista the graphics capabilities are bumped to 256mb – is this true and if so will it make running older games possible on the NC10?
Ive seen a youtube video of someone playing World of Warcraft on the NC10 without being upgraded but it only ran at around 10fps, would installing 2GB of RAM and Vista up that rate? Obviously I realize this machine isnt designed to play games but the ability to play some of the older ones when im not working would be nice.
Thanks.

MemberIF anything installing Vista will lower performance as Vista is alot more CPU/Recourse heavy than XP is.
BTW, I have World of Warcraft running at a solid 25FPS when doing some simple grinding but in the main citys It drops to around 5fps which is still fine if IM just going to the bank, getting mail or using the Auction House.

MemberLets put it this way, I use Vista for day to day use but if I want to play UT2004 I go back to XP.
Does that answer the question ;o)

MemberIt looks like you can get FM 09 running with a bit of work.

As far as the ram is concerned, I would upgrade regardless but it appears that the maximum memory the chipset can allow for video is 224mb and that change only shows up in vista (and presumably windows 7). Maybe bios updates will change this, I don’t really know but I’m hopeful.

MemberFrom what I have heard, Vista will actually have better performance than XP, granted you have the 2GB of ram, because Vista will make better use of the Hyperthreading Technology on the Atom than XP.
Vista is a resource hog so 2GB is necessary but will at the same time alleviate any performance problems.

MemberThanks for the replies fellas, ill definately upgrade the RAM and then see if I can get Football Manager to work (thanks for the link jawni), if not I may try running it with Vista.
Will probably pick up the NC10 tomorrow 🙂

[/quote1232093166]Yeah I did consider that however I was referring to the graphical boost Vista gives. From what ive read XP caps at 128mb in this machine whereas Vista allows up to 256mb. I was wondering if (despite the hit on processor performace) would graphics be improved by switching to Vista.

Did you upgrade to 2GB RAM to achieve that?

MemberI would suggest installing the Windows 7 public beta before installing Vista! Windows 7 runs better than XP in a lot of cases, and WAY better than Vista. Max Payne seems to run very well in Windows 7, for instance. Try installing a demo of WoW to see how it runs before purchasing it.

There are drivers available for the NC10 that work with Vista, you don’t have to buy them they are available to download from the internet. If you look in the Vista sub-forum there are threads there which have more information about the correct drivers to install. However, it is worth pointing out that XP Home is the only Operating System that is supported by Samsung on the NC10. If you really are a beginner then you need to consider carefully whether changing to Vista is the right choice to make as you will be foregoing any technical support if something goes wrong.

Memberjust my 2 cents, after upgrading to vista, I actuallly see some performance gain. I don’t have a data or statistics to back it up , but with the xp, my nc10 was prone to random errors and it sometimes slowed down for no reason.
Also, wifi speed has increased dramatically for me. I don’t know about anyone else, but for me, vista upgrade was a lifesaver.
I don’t see any lags when opening a new window or folder. I could probably sell my regular laptop because this does essentially everything I need to do.
Plus, vista looks way better than outdated xp.

MemberI’ve recently been running WoW on my 2gb upgraded NC10. I’ve done none of the Windows XP tweaks, other than switching off swap file.
Runs ok if you stick all the display options etc to low. About 12fps on Arathor server. Drops to 5fps in big cities. Never seen 25fps though, although in fairness I run the NC10 with its standard powersaving switched on.
I’ve got a 16gb Class 6 SD in the post, was going to copy the entire WoW folder onto it (for easy switching/patching between PC’s). I know SD had a fast access time, I doubt it’ll make much odds (but i’ll update here if I see any difference).
Also worth noting is I play this with mobile broadband (3), the actual data throughtput is tiny, lag isn’t really an issue even though the latency is about 600ms.
