MemberHi, just went to post a message asking how noisy the nc10 is and something came to mind.
I think there are too many different ‘forums’ within this forum at the moment. It would be good if there was just two or three categories to begin with as then all the activity would concentrated in less areas. I think this can be key to boosting the success of forums (I have run two for the past 5 years). I found it difficult to find where to post my question.
Of course this only my opinion and massive respect to Jez for starting this site. I think the site is already successful but…OK a case in point…People are asking questions about the nc10 in beginnrs questions AND general discussion so threads are being unnecessarily spread around.
I would go for….
1. General NC10 discussion
2. Hacking and modification
3. Anything elseSeriously! And then as the posts fill up 1 page within a day start branching out.

Memberi’m not so sure…
with the ammount of people that are buying and will be recieving one of these in the next two months i don’t really think there is much point going to all that effort just to have to undo it in a few weeks time.

MemberI think it is easier to expand a forum than contract it perhaps? I think ezman has a fair point and a couple of the areas aren’t very logical.
I have consolidated some of the less used areas and moved the “general” forum to the top. This was actually supposed to be an off topic area so I have added one of those. The next release of this CMS has some much more powerful forum controls planned so I look forward to implementing that. For now merging is done by SQL script!
I think the “beginners area” might be a little redundant but I find it nice to have a non-threatening place where people can ask questions and anyone who replies knows that the user might not be “tech savvy”.
Any other ideas for consolidation?
It’s quite difficult this – harder than it looks! I’ve used forums for the last 10 years, been a moderator on a large gaming forum – but never actually ran one!
At some point I might set up a forum mods class!

MemberYou’re doing a great job Jez, and nice one on clarifying the general discussion forum – good move 🙂

MemberI’ve run chat rooms and forums for about 8 years and usually I advise against a new community having too many sections because it looks very empty and unappealing when only a few posts have been made. However, as this one is taking off so quickly and there are lots of posts already, I think having several well-defined areas is good and will help future-proof the site.
I think ezman’s suggestions on consolidating the beginner’s and general discussion areas are excellent and I’m glad you’ve decided to implement this. It’s very clear what the off-topic forum is for as well. 🙂
