So one of my bosses is an IBM freak, only buys IBM stuff and loves the things. When he asked me to look for a laptop for him, I immediately thought Samsung NC10 as he uses it for email and web and travels a lot. Anyway, on my internet travels I had a look around at all the future and existing netbooks and the IBM seemed to be an NC10 beater!
Has anyone seen one or know anyone who’s got one? I am sure they’ll be more expensive than the NC10, I think I saw the 80GB (still plenty) version available for £313.
There will be or is already a 160GB version, or the cheaper 80GB version. Seems to have a good 10 inch screen, should be very well made being IBM, looks (in the photos) to be smaller than the NC10 since it’s screen is the same size but has less room around the edge of the screen so it must have a slightly small keyboard? I think the ram is much of amuchness so probably 1gb, upgrade to 2gb for £20. Usual Atom processor etc too I believe,
So, what do people think?

IBM is just really, stable as a rock. But i would say. Give yor samsung a day to the boss and let him play with it. I guarantee he will love it ;P
December 4, 2008 at 9:23 pm #173831dougpMemberS10 only has a 3 cell battery and smaller hard drive – but is cheaper by $100 here in the states.
December 4, 2008 at 10:39 pm #173837adatay92MemberI think the 3 cell battery on the S10 is the major disadvantage. Otherwise it actually sounds quite good.
December 5, 2008 at 5:26 am #173841SmeedMemberI work at Circuit City and they have ones that are exactly like the NC10 except they have a 3 cell battery. They go for $450. Ive played around with it a bit and IMO the NC10 seems sturdier.
December 5, 2008 at 1:32 pm #173828jonbadMemberThanks for the input guys, keep it coming!
I’m definitely going to let him have a look at my NC10 so that he can see what he thinks, as even if he likes the sound of the IBM better (knowing him he will) he might not even like the size, so it’s worth him trying it to see what he thinks of the size initially.
I had a look on a couple of YOUTUBE videos and was happy to see the S10’s hard drive and ram are very easy to upgrade (although I wouldn’t want to upgrade the HDD but ram is good).
Other than that, it’s nice that it’s smaller than most other netbooks but maintains the 10inch size, but honestly, what’s the point in being a bit smaller – they’re all small! The review on the YOUTUBE video said that they didn’t like the smaller keyboard than the MSI wind (which’ll mean it’s smaller than the NC10’s) and the SHIFT key is in the wrong place, ala EEE.
Still, doesn’t sound too bad still, and if it’s $100 less in the states that is a huge saving, especially as he is often in the states (in fact he’s there right now!)
December 5, 2008 at 2:38 pm #173836azentropyMemberI was leaning towards getting a S10 and almost ordered one. But since people who ordered from the website said their expected ship date was 6+ weeks I decided to wait.
I think the S10 has excellent build quaility, but for me it came down to two issues. The right shift key, and the battery life.

2:22 vs. 6:34 was well worth the $100 to me – and that doesn’t count for having twice the storage and twice the ram..
December 6, 2008 at 12:15 am #173833mister2MemberBattery should not be a factor. Lenovo S10 is available with a six cell battery. Heck, you can even purchase a nine cell battery on eBay. Price difference is negligible when similarly equipped.
The two biggest factor IMO is aesthetics and keyboard. Lenovo wins the aesthetics while Samsung wins the keyboard.
December 6, 2008 at 12:28 am #173834hefMemberyeah, the hard drive capacity and the battery life (which is especially short even for a 3 cell according to most of the reviews kicking around) really disadvantage and otherwise really good ‘book.

[/quote1228543926]Battery is a factor because you cannot buy a 6 cell on the S10 in the US.
December 6, 2008 at 12:50 pm #173829jonbadMemberOk, so we’re all agreed that the NC10 is better then! I’m sure that the IBM is an excellent machine, but the keyboard might well be the major downside to it. Personally, having gotten used to the NC10’s keyboard, I am very happy with it and took to it like a duck to water. However anything smaller I imagine would be a bit of a pain and almost unusable except for menial tasks and short quick emails. Coupled with the wrongly placed right shift key, I think the IBM’s biggest downfall as a useable small laptop is the keyboard.

[/quote1228572032]Me too! I like the way it looks (in the photos – haven’t seen it IRL) and it’s cheaper. But as my signature says, I chose Samsung instead.
The main reasons for not ordering Lenovo were:
* AFAIK, the version they sell in Europe comes with a glossy display. This is not a huge disadvantage but made me think twice. Also, I find the resolution a bit strange: 1.024 x 576.
* I would have wanted an S10 with Linux, but at the time the Linux version is not in stock and at least cyberport.de says it will be available starting from 18th Dec – they have already postponed the availability date by a week, so I wouldn’t be too sure to get one even this year…
I wanted a laptop by Christmas to stay sane during the holidays, so I couldn’t take the risk. 😀December 6, 2008 at 3:20 pm #173838DjFILMember1024 x 576 is true 16:9 widescreen ratio. that’s only reason why they’d go with that instead of the 1024 x 600 we’ve been seeing on every other netbook. i’d rather the extra 24 lines of vertical resolution.
December 7, 2008 at 5:58 pm #173835NcssryEvlMemberGo with the Samsung. The Lenovo was #1 on my list until the NC10 came out.
It gives you an expresscard slot, but robs you of a USB. I need that extra USB port more than an I need an expresscard slot.
As mentioned, no Lenovos come with 6 cell batteries in the USA, and have inferior keyboards.
Plus Samsung has a 3 year warranty vs. the 1 year with Lenovo.
December 12, 2008 at 1:29 pm #173830jonbadMemberyou can add USB ports using an express card slot so other than having to buy the card, that’s not an issue at all.
I think Lenovo have now released the 6 cell version in the states, at least I definitely saw it on their website yesterday at about $420 I believe. Here in the UK however it seems we’ve been given the S10e (the e being important) and it looks like it’s a slightly “cheaper” model as it still has the 3 cell battery.
Prices are low at the moment though, so when (if) the 6 cell comes out in the UK it will be a very good laptop indeed. As previously stated nine million times though!!!!! Its the keyboard being smaller and with a dodgy right shift key position that is the real setback.
That interesting about the warranty though, I didn’t know that and am glad to hear it about the samsung!!
The final news about the Lenovo is that they’ve gone for the Samsung in White so I should be getting it in the next few days which (although it’s not for me ultimately) I’m looking forward to!!
