I think I’ll hold off on my purchase now. I don’t plan to game much… it’s only a netbook… but I wouldn’t mind anything to replace a GMA9xx GPU. They say the price shouldn’t up much more then $50 on average. Hopefully we won’t wait too long to see these NVidia GPU Netbooks to arrive.

Membersee the problem I have with holding off is that there’s always something newer/flashier/possibly better around the corner once the thing that you’ve been waiting for arrives so you put it off again
and again
and again

MemberAgreed. imo you have to write out a checklist detailing what you want from your ideal machine. When enough of the check boxes are ticked it’s time to buy. This will of course potentially give different results for all of us.
There are some big things that are coming that I want. But then for £300 I’m happy for this NC10 to see me through because it will be some time before netbooks have touchscreens as standard with super fast large SSD drives, long battery life, multi core processors. For a netbook price – you can already get all that now if you pay pay pay!
This debate has gone on on many forums and I don’t think there is a right answer. It depends very much on what you want and how much money you are prepared to spend upgrading to something else and in what time frame!!
PS. the NC10 is ace 😉

MemberI think the biggest factor at the moment with netbooks isn’t graphics. If you’re going to be buying something this small for the graphics maybe you need to reassess why you’re buying a netbook and maybe look into buying a laptop. I really feel the biggest factor is battery life and with graphics cards you’re going to get worse battery life. The more netbooks progress the shorter the battery life as there will be more ‘features’ to drain it.

MemberI’m waiting for the NC11? hopefully by then they’ll addres the screen, the trackpad, and wireless N
The plus with companies like Samsung is they turn new models out pretty fast, so late spring/summer might be a good time.
For ‘me’ that would tick all the boxes.

MemberIsn’t the Atom cpu still going to be underpowered for recent games? I’m sure most recent games have a minimum requirement of a 3.2ghz P4. I know the Atom is optimised and all but it can’t make up that much of a difference. I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed with these so called ‘gaming’ netbooks like the N10J thinking they will be able to play Crysis at reasonable frame rates etc.

MemberI don’t think people want a desktop replacement netbook but better graphics would be good and a lot of people want it, just type netbook games into google.
Once we get nvidia graphics and 768+ in the screen’s vertical then I’ll upgrade my sammy.

MemberI’m with the “why wait” crowd. You’ll be waiting forever if your waiting for the next best thing. Gaming on a netbook? Sure it would be cool if you could get some nice games on there but for this class of machine I wouldn’t want to sacrifice, price, size, and battery life for some FPS action.
Sure one day machines half this size will be able to crunch the numbers like super computers but for now these things are a great value!

MemberI could probably sell my NC10 and get the “newest” netbook when they do come out and probably only need $100-$200 to make up the difference. But I wanted my netbook now, not 6 months from now… the other Issue is Windows XP is not going to be available for ever… by the time the newest whatever is out you may not be able to get XP on it… sure u can install it after the fact if the drivers are available, but was nice to get original XP SP3 disk with my Sammy… So far the games I want to play are running fine…

MemberDeciding whether or not to buy now has become an issue for me too. I think I’m going to go ahead and buy now because I originally wanted a netbook for school and coffee shop writing. As for games, I don’t need anything beyond emulators and newgrounds.com. Now, if I could only find a cheap console style PC controller.

MemberI always say, 1st work out what you want from a netbook, then work out whether any device can do all those things. Then buy the cheapest!
Using that logic some people may want to wait because they want portable games machines or whatever. But anyone wanting a casual netbook for browsing and running day to day apps – no need to wait 🙂

MemberYou will have a long wait, Intel won’t sell Atom’s to be part of the Ion chipset:

See the thread on the NC20, Samsung is reportedly moving to the Via Nano with the Trinity chipset. The NC20 is to be released in February of 2009.

[/quote1230178689]Absolutely! You are dea on. I always tell people, don’t wait to buy, just buy when you need to. There is always something new coming out in 6-9 months. The next round of netbooks will be here next summer, but there will be a ‘new batch’ of super improved, cool, tricked out, etc… due in another 6 months. If you wait for the next best thing, you’ll always be waiting.

MemberYou will never get a gaming netbook! By the time your netbook can run Crisis (which probably isn’t that far away) full size machines will be running Crisis 3!
Netbook will all ways be behind and what do you expect for £300! You need to spend a lot more to run the new games. Netsbooks will all ways be playing older games rather than new ones. Sure someone is going to release something that can run the new games but £800 isn’t a netbook in my mind!
Battery life is what counts and every upgrade you get will lower that! But I think 4 hours is acceptable so a few upgrades would be nice. I do play quite a few games on my Sammy but I like the old 2d ones best as they look great on the small screen and the system doesn’t get remotely hot! Quake Live! That’s what I am waiting for! not a new netbook 😉
