MemberHey guys.
OK, so, yesterday, I was fortunate enough to finish downloading the Windows 7 Beta (the 2.4 gb version, whichever one that is…).
After looking around the internet, I could not find a decent guide on installing this new OS. Most of them involved PCs that were running Vista, and since I have XP on my main work computer, the instructions were unclear.
So, using what I learned from guides throughout the internet, I have created my own walkthrough.**This walkthrough is extremely simple and requires only one quick download! Changing your BIOS to boot from flash drive is unnecessary!!**
– I don’t know if this will work on other netbooks, but having the partitions on the nc10 made it easier.
NOTE: These instructions will allow you to have XP and Windows 7 at the same time on your netbook (dual booting)
It is recommended to back up all of your files and programs onto a USB drive in case of accidental memory wipe. Then take that flash drive an copy all of your information onto your main computer. You’ll need that flash drive for later. OR, if you have two, then just use one for backup and one for installation. Just know that the installation drive will have to be formatted. You will need:
-a netbook
-internet connection
-main computer running XP (I don’t know if Vista will work, but you’re welcome to try)
-USB flash drive ( I have a Sandisk Cruzer 8 GB).
-the Windows 7 iso file. ( you HAVE downloaded it, right lol?!)Let’s begin.
Ok, so the first thing you have to do is take out your flash drive and plug it into your main computer. Wait till the computer recognizes it and then press
Start > Right-click My Computer. From the drop down menu, click Manage. This will open up the Computer Management. Look on the left side. Under Storage, you should see Disk Management. Click it.
Now, on the main viewing window, you should see your flash drive.>>Before we go any further, make sure that you have copied all of your files to your PC, as we are going to format the flash drive. Everything will be erased from the flash drive, so make sure you have a copy of your documents and such<< Right-Click your flash drive and from the drop-down list, click Format. Make sure that it is in FAT32 format. Check the Quick Format box if you want to. After the flash drive has been formatted, go back to the main screen. Like before, right-click on your flash drive on the main viewing window and press Mark Partition as Active. For me, that option was in gray letters meaning I couldn’t choose it. If the letters are grayed out for you also, then that is fine, it means that your flash drive is already active! After you do that, you are ready. Close the Computer Manager. Now, open up your web browser, go to Google, and type in “Daemon tools.” Click the first result, which should say “THE DAMONS HOME” (lol creepy, I know). Scroll a little down until you see “The new version of DAEMON Tools Lite is available: DAEMON Tools Lite Version 4.30.3.”
Download it.>>ALSO DOWNLOAD IT ONTO YOUR NETBOOK FOR LATER!! But if you want to hold off on downloading it to your netbook that is fine as well. Just pay close attention in the following steps.<<<< When it is done, install it and start it up. It should appear as a blue bar across the bottom of the screen, right above the Task Bar. >>When you click the icon, you might not see anything at first. So, you look at the right of your task bar, right-click on the purple lightning bolt, and click DAEMON Tools panel. Now you should have the bluish-purple bar on your screen. Near the end of that bar, there is a little space that says
“Device 0: [G:] No Media” (the letters might be different for you). Anyway, it is clickable, so…click it lol.
Ok, now you are in a file opener. Find where the Windows 7 Beta iso file is located on your computer and press open file. This is a test to see if it works. The file should start with: “7000.8.0812…..whatever”. So, click the iso file to open it up. Wait a couple seconds and…what’s this? A new Windows 7 installer has appeared! Use Pokeball?
….lolAnyway, close it. Do not install it on your pc. So now, close DAEMON Tools Lite and open up your flash drive on your computer. Go to where your iso file is and Drag/Drop OR copy/paste the iso file onto your flash drive. No programs needed. Just like that. It should take a couple minutes….so do whatever you want. Once it is done copying into your flash drive, you’re ready for business.
Now, close everything on your computer and “safely remove” your flash drive. Put it aside for now.
Turn your netbook on. Following the instructions above, to to the same site and download DAEMON Tools Lite 4.30.3 again onto your netbook (This is assuming you didn’t download it before, but that’s ok too).
Once it is downloaded to your netbook, open it up. Now take out your flash drive and plug it into your netbook. Using DAEMON tools, open up the iso file on your flash drive.Congratulations, you are now at the installation screen. Wasn’t that easy? Just a few simple steps and you’re done.
Now, pick one of the installation options You can only pick one, seeing as how the netbook doesn’t run VIsta. It says that all your programs will be erased, but do not worry. They won’t be. They’ll just be on another partition of your hard drive. When it asks you where to install WIndows 7, pick the empty partition (I think it is labeled D). Just wait a several minutes and you should now have WIndows 7 on the other parition of your hard drive.
Thus, you have both WIndows XP and 7.
Whenever you turn on your netbook, it will give you an option on whether to run XP or Windows 7. Pick whichever one you feel like using and you’re done. When you open up Windows XP, it will look exactly as it did before the install with all your programs and files. Thanks for reading this walkthrough. I hoped that I helped you in some way!

MemberI installed Windows 7 on my D: partition this afternoon and am currently setting everything up how I like it.
I simply extracted the ISO on the NC10 using 7-Zip and ran the setup file. No need to mount anything. Install was about 25 minutes.

MemberI agree with Becky – discovered that method on my desktop (I have no dvd-burner or 4-8GB USB key lol!). I recommend the ISO extraction as its much easier, and less mucking around. Windows 7 also automatically backs up your XP installation and allows rollback (but you can use Recovery Solution to restore your image).

MemberDouble agreed. I extracted to an external hdd and installed it from within xp.
On another computer, I just mounted the iso across a network share and setup just copied the files across with no need for a local/boot disc.

Membertriple agreed lol i just extraced the iso to a usb hardrive using winrar
and it took around 25 minutes to install no mounting required plus version 4 of deamon tools has a pretty nasty driver in it for xp startup times

MemberI just installed it the same way as i did Vista. Copied the content from the image to a 8 GB MicroSD inside a High Speed Sandisk USB adapter, just cause that’s what i had, you can use any usb stick as long as it has sufficient capacity. How to do this was explained in another post.
Created a new free partition from within XP. Adjusted the Bios, so the NC10 will boot from USB.
Then reboot the NC10 and the installation begins, after the first session of installation Windows7 will reboot your NC10, unplug your usb device before it starts up again 🙂
All went well, i just didn’t liked the fish on the background 🙂There are some links around for a few drivers. For me Easy_Display_Manager 2.2.10.1 for Vista works on Windows7. And here’s how the LAN driver can be installed http://netbookish.com/2009/01/windows-7-beta-1-and-my-samsung-nc10.html

MemberThanks Joseph! I followed your tutorial, and am now dual booting XP and Windows 7. I feel awesomely geeky now. 😛
It was really not as difficult as I thought it would be.
Once W7 is released, I’m going to try to install OSx.

MemberJust wondering is it possible just to do a clean install witin XP, I am doing a dual boot now, once tested I want to wipe all partitions and just have Win 7 on its own or do I have to keep recovery partition for warranty purpose.
Or I could just keep recovery and delete the rest of partitions and get rid of XP altogher. -
