Well I got fed up waiting for Play.com to deliver, so I headed off for a tour of the shops tonight. I went to PC World, who didn’t have any in stock, then I crossed town to Currys who had two in stock – a black one on display and a blue one. I saw them both and decided to go for the blue one, though it was very marginal between them.
Things of note are that the screen size is absolutely on the limit of what I consider acceptable, but the quality of the image is excellent. I would like the NC20 to have an 11 or 12 inch screen, for sure. The keyboard is fine, very nice.
The fingerprint issue bothered me before handling one, but on both the black and blue it seems to have been blown out of proportion – at least to my eyes. There is some smudging when you run your fingers on the back of the netbook, but it wipes away easily enough. Maybe this bothers some people more than others? I would say it shows an area where a lack of thought has gone into the design, but it’s so minor it’s not worth worrying about.
I also peeled the stickers off, the “designed for xp” & the samsung one, and the MS sticker underneath. I left the Intel Atom sticker as I kind of liked it.
I purchased an external DVD drive that runs off USB – a Liteon branded one. I haven’t tested it on the NC10 yet, but it works fine from my Acer laptop. I’m going to change the O/S, even if only to install XP professional and obliterate some of the Samsung proprietry stuff. I’m going to read up on Ubuntu for netbooks now and see if that’s worth using. I also have OS/X here somewhere so might give that a try if nothing else feels right.
Sorry I typed so much. 🙂

One thing I have to say is that the battery is astonishing. I took it to work fully charged, was working on it from about 9am to 4pm, drove home, put it back on about 6pm – it died about 10 mins ago. What a battery!
November 28, 2008 at 7:52 pm #172025BeckyMemberCongrats on getting your NC10 – and welcome to Club Blue! 😀
It’s interesting that people are having more luck finding NC10s in Currys than PC World, or even online for that matter. I got my blue from Currys too.
I’m not particularly bothered by the fingerprints either. Oh and I removed the big orange sticker with the specs on next to the touchpad, enormous bloody thing lol.
November 28, 2008 at 8:00 pm #172030tobsMemberThanks guys. I forgot to add, they weren’t moving on the price. I ended up paying £322. I could have kept my £299 order in with Play but decided what the hell. I played the price match card, but couldn’t name anywhere on the web with the price at £299 when put on the spot! The guy said “sorry, it’s £322 or no sale.”
November 28, 2008 at 8:21 pm #172027limesmoothMemberI tried to knock down the price of the Tech Air bag, on the ground that it was only £14.99 on PC World website, but the guy in Currys wanted to charge me £20.99. No deal……
Aye, I think they are pretty wise to the fact that the price has gone up to £329 everywhere.

The battery life is very impressive was using it lastnight today and from 5 this evening till ten mins ago when it went into hibernate!November 28, 2008 at 10:06 pm #172028BritmanMemberYes, welcome to the club. Membership card is in the post.
I still find it strange that the price has shot up in under a week, although saveonsamsung.com do still have the black one priced at £299 with free next day delivery. This is where I bought mine. -
