Hi sorry for newbie question but can the nc10 boot and install vista from a usb stick? ive got a 8gb one handy but no optical at the moment, i dropped it …………….. 🙁
if you can network your desktop and sammy then you should be able to install it over the network buy just making the DVD in the desktop a shared device. Or if you have a Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive you can use that as Windows will see it as a DVD drive.
My NC10 won’t get in until later today so I haven’t actually tried this yet, but the short answer is yes – you *should* be able to install an OS from a USB drive. Google it – there are several guides on how to do this.
using a pen drive is easiest. All you need is your disc and pen drive. Instructions i use are here and easy to follow

I don’t know if Vista comes on a CD or a DVD BUT if the DVD image is smaller than 4GB then you can install it via a Sandisk U3 usb stick.
You simply create an iso image of ANY bootable CD/DVD – e.g.

You simply create an iso image of ANY bootable CD/DVD – e.g. XP/VISTA/Linux and then download this little program called universal customiser and customise the USB stick.
then you simply boot of the usb stick like a normal external CD/DVD drive, soooo easy and not that many people know about it. there are all these complicated tutorials about how to boot from SD cards and create bootable ones etc. but this just make life pathetically easy!
Even when installation comes on DVD what prevents you from using vLite to cut installation, taking out unecessary parts? I cut win7 installation down to 1.2Gb , as I don’t neew MediaCenter, sample music and pics, same you can do with Vista
Just as a side note- the directions above work like a charm, but it must be in vista or later. XP has diskpart, but it won’t recognize the flash drive, so it can’t format or set as active.
I did this, used vLite to shrink to 1.8GB 🙂
However i needed to make the usb drive bootable it was a command that involved a program inside the cd files you’ll find it on google.
