MemberHello, Happy Christmas.
I’ve been toying with getting a netbook for a little while. In Currys today the sales man was as much use as a Chocolate fire guard, so it’s to google for help. I quite like the Samsung NC10, hence I’ve signed up to this site. I have a few questions to ask.
Whats the battery life like. I use office 2007, virtual PC & server, and like to watch a film or 2 when Im on my travels. I know it’s not got a mini reactor in the battery pack so it will need some topping up. 1 hour 2 hours??.
Does the NC19 have a flight mode, or does everyone just turn off bluetooth and wifi in BIOS.
Memory, always wanting more. I know the NC10 comes with 1Gb installed, but is there an expansion solt for another DDR2 memory card??
Help me Help me Help Me, so I can get my toy, and my lass can kick my arse when she finds out what I’ve treated myself to.
I found John Lewis are doing the NC10 in all colours for £322 inc 5 day delivery and 2 years product support. Any ideas, good or bad??
Cheers you all
Marty

ParticipantBattery Life is very good, though obviously it will depend on what you are running. I tend to get around 5 hours of normal usage (internet, watching the occasional video, music etc…) with WiFi and Bluetooth active and the screen on around 33% brightness.
It does not have a flight mode, WiFi has a button to toggle it on or off in addition to being able to set it’s state in the BIOS. Bluetooth does not have any on/off switch or setting in the BIOS, for Bluetooth I turn it off in software.
The NC10 has a single RAM slot which is accessible via a hatch on the bottom, it will take a 2GB module.
A lot of this has already been covered in other thread in greater detail.

MemberBattery life exceeds every other netbook I’ve seen tested, extending past 6.5 hours. Lots of documentation to that effect (beyond my own experience)

No flight mode. WiFi can be turned off at the keyboard but Bluetooth requires the BIOS, unless you can get this to work:

There is only one slot, you replace the 1GB chip with a 2GB chip
Looks like I was beaten out whilst typing 🙂
BTW, everything you’ve asked has been addressed in detail in these forums. A search would have answered your questions and provided additional context.

MemberHello everyone.
Thanks for the gen. I would have searched more, but being at work with a new leader that keeps an eye on everything I just put a quick post up. That said I now have to hide the fact that I’ve just bought it online and cant wait for it to arrive and play.
Cheers you all.

MemberMake sure to let us kno what you think of it, but put it this way, I think you’ll be the first person to try virtualisation stuff on it – its handled everything that i’ve thrown at it, but the most powerfull thing i’ve tryed is wamp. From the reviews I red before I purchased one, I got the impression that the atom wasn’t exactly a power house; I mean its no celeron, but i’m not sure how well something like vm ware would run.

ParticipantI’ve tried running some virtualised OS’s via VMWare Player (running under Windows), Ubuntu ran poorly, BeOS Haiku ran ok though. I wouldn’t expect too much out of the Atom virtualisation wise. Also I don’t think the Atom processor has VT-x hardware support which doesn’t help.
I might try VirtualBox running under Fedora sometime.

Between 3 and 5 hours. Its about the avarage use of virtual PC. Im getting with office 2007 and a movie about 5,5 hours.Does the NC19 have a flight mode, or does everyone just turn off bluetooth and wifi in BIOS.
Its possible to disable them in windows. Wifi via FN keys. Bluetooth by rightclicking on the bluetooth icon and there is something like “start the bluetooth device”, i havent got the correct text because ive got a Dutch windows on it.Memory, always wanting more. Yup. The board has 1 slot, which is already used for the 1 gig stick. So you need to replace it with a 2gb stick. -
