MemberIf you use Media Player Classic + K-Lite Codec Basic + Core AVC Pro then 720p is no problem, you can even play some 1080p movies if the bitrate isn’t too high.

MemberI found exactly the same thing. However MPC and CoreAVC I have no problem. So I assume it was K-Lite that is conflicting somewhere along the line.

i thought this removed k-lite and it was smooth but no audio

MemberAll i’ve installed is the K-Lite Basic codec pack (Free download), and WMP9 can play 720p files fine! Smooth, no stutter or lag!
I’ve downloaded a few 720p WMV files from Windows.com, and they all play fine! 1080p files start smooth, but then stutters every 5secs after.
VLC doesn’t work for me, for some reason. WMP9 seems to play them all better!

MemberIt depends what you play. CoreAVC will work great for AVC encodes, typically found in MKV files.
The player is usually less of an issue as it’s all driven by codecs, although some have their own built in codecs. WMP will just do much the same as MPC, but WMP is bloated beyond belief and will consume resources.
Note you will need to ensure CoreAVC is used in MPC. In MPC, go to Options->External Filters and select Add Filter. You should be able to add CoreAVC. I had to mark it as ‘prefer’ also to ensure it’s picked up, otherwise it will use the AVC decoder in K-Lite which will stutter. Restart MPC also to pick up the changes.
Still worth using K-Lite for other formats though.
Another help might be to set Speed Mode when running MPC to give the system a kick, and of course it’s best connected to the mains. Though I have managed to play 720p MKV files on a plane. Couldn’t run in Silent mode but Normal worked okay. Brightness set right down and it’s still bright enough in a dark plane.
The NC10 is great hooked up to a HDTV too! I stick mine on the mains and hook up the VGA to my 1080p telly and a 3.5mm to phono cable to the AV amp, and get great movie and TV show watching in surround even (thanks to ProLogic). Not as good as proper digital 5.1 audio, but still it’s pretty good.
Just change the output to CRT and first time ensure the display resolution matches the TV (e.g. 1920×1080). Playing 720p or regular SD stuff, it gets upscaled quite well to 1080p.
Another option is to use MediaPortal. It’s a free media portal interface and makes it much easier to browse your media on a TV from a distance. I also have a wireless keyboard/mouse combo so just plug the USB receiver into the NC10 and can work it from the sofa.
Again with Media Portal, you need to check the settings to ensure the correct codecs/players are being used, though I found it did pick up CoreAVC automatically.
p.s. if you do QuickTime stuff, you can avoid installing Apple’s bloatware (and get iTunes / Safari forced upon you) and install QTLite as an addition to K-Lite. It’s on the same site. Some of the QT HD trailers are very impressive.

MemberMake sure you get the settings right and use Core AVC for H264 support. You should even be able to play 1080p, 720p should not be a problem.

Memberi’m trying to fiddle around with my settings to get my setup to work smoothly, but can any of you play either of the Terminator2 .wmv HD files from microsoft’s HD demo page without skipping?:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/contentshowcase.aspx
(especially during the explosion scenes)
can anything speed up flash/streaming video? you tube at 720 seems impossible and even advertising content in firefox that has streaming elements seem to bog down the loading of the page. (I guess i could find a plug-in to stop them from loading.)
[edit] MPC seems to handle the 720p file adequately, but the 1080p file is not close to watchable. Is there any way to force WMP11 to use certain codecs?

MemberI had downloaded that clip before to test with and yes it plays smoothly AND 100% perfect in MPC but not in WMP11. This clip does not use Core AVC though.
No special settings needed for this clip. Are you using Media Player Classic ver. 6.4.9.0?

MemberI just played that T2 clip in WMP11 without downloading anything at all and it played back perfectly fine. Maybe once or twice I could see a dropped frame, but only for a split second.
