A friend handed me his NC10 and asked if I can help. I’m a 30 year technical veteran but haven’t worked with any of the netbooks.
XP boots paritally but reports that 40% of the disk is unreadable. Recovery mode is Windows XP recovery not Samsund Recover Solution that I have seen referenced in forums. XP Recovery eventually fails also. He doesn’t seem to have any CD/DVD with software, just manual and power cord.
I believe I have to format, possibly replace, the drive, reinstall XP and apps. From the BIOS it appears that I could boot from an external USB drive to do all of that.
Is this a special version of XP?
What other apps came with the system and where can I get them?
Where can I get all of the necessary drivers?
JimLanders – Welcome to the forum
If the hard drive is not unserviceable you can press [F4] at the boot splash screen and recover the NC10 from the Recovery partition. Else XP can be installed using the key provided on the netbook.
It appears that driver support on most of the Samsung sites seems to be have taken down for some reason but this link is working at the moment. Samsung Support
This is an ‘old’ post detailing driver information
NC10 Driver Versions (updated 2009-10-16)
The bios does indeed support external USB drives. Set the prority to USB HDD for flash drives.
Hope this helps
Thanks- that is exactly what I did – I tried several time previously but apparently not tapping the key fast enough so it went to Windows Restore
It appears to be like new – will run some disk utilities to test the drive more thoroughly – hopefully it was not bad sectors just trashed FAT/lost clusters or even a virus.
