Hi
I hope someone can help me here.
here’s the situation:
Installed BT Homehub system, all working properly on main desktop. I connected with a separate laptop to the wireless system – all working properly (ie, a wireless connection to the BT Hub. However, when i set up a NC10 connection to the Hub, despite there being connection in the start menu (it says it is ‘excellent’) when i open my browser it says ‘address not found’. Nothing seems to be getting through.
One thing I noticed is that the wireless dialogue says that it is ‘acquiring network address’. Is this relevant?
i can’t understand this. the firewall I have is not the problem – I’ve tried it off altogether, but that makes no difference.
Any ideas folks

Try right clicking on the wireless icon in the bottom right hand side of the screen and select ‘Repair’ from the drop down menu.
February 10, 2009 at 8:26 am #183159TCMuffinMemberIf that doesn’t work, click on the ‘Start’ button and select:
All Programs > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt
In the Command Prompt window type:
ipconfig /release and hit enter
Wait for the command to finish executing and then type:
ipconfig /renew and hit enter
From your description of your problem, it seems as if your NC10 is struggling to acquire a network address, by trying both of the above we have forced the network adapter to find a new address that doesn’t conflict with any other devices on your network.

Quick response. many thanks. Amazingly I’d just started trying that, as I did last night. I compared the two connections, my laptop and the NC10, and noticed that there were no IP address details on the NC10 connection. So clinked on repair as you suggest, but it seems stuck on the dialogue, ‘Renewing your IP address’. It’s been stuck like that for 10 minutes. How long should it take? Thanks again
JFebruary 10, 2009 at 8:29 am #183160TCMuffinMemberNot that long 😉
Once you’ve tried the ipconfig thing, the next thing to try is to force a ‘cold boot’. Press and hold the power button until the netbook switches off. Press the power button to turn it on again.
February 10, 2009 at 8:31 am #183161TCMuffinMemberAny notebook computer that connects to the power supply via a battery never completely turns off as there is always a trickle charge from the battery.
Pressing and holding the power button to turn it off, has the same effect as unplugging a desktop PC.
February 10, 2009 at 8:33 am #183162TCMuffinMemberWhilst you’re at it, you may as well turn off the BT Hub and turn it back on again to force it to allocate new network addresses to all the devices attached to it.
February 10, 2009 at 8:42 am #183165Don_AudioMemberCheck this real quick:
Click “Start” then
All Programs > Programs > Accessories > Command PromptEnter ipconfig and check if you have a valid ip adress and a default gateway.
Make sure that the ip adress is not
169.254.0.xxxYou might wanna post your IP Adress and Gateway to this Thread so people can help you out

many thanks to all advisers here. The machine is now working.
That was the quickest and best advice I’ve had – a great internet experience.
As we say in Scotland, ‘may yir lums aye be reekin’.

I wish to visit Scotland and Ireland soon, hopefully as a semester abroad! Thanks,

February 25, 2009 at 2:44 pm #183168thenorthernerMemberHi
Sorry, I missed the 2nd page.‘may yer lums’ – may your chimneys
‘aye be’ – always be
‘reekin’ – expelling smoke (smelly smoke at that)So, may your chimneys always be expelling smoke. May you be blessed with good fortune (an ever smoking fire would have been a sign of being secure and comfortable and probably affluent). There are more dubious interpretations based on the idea of human plumbing.
