Nick
MemberI just joined the forum and wanted to say hello…and get the last word on how satisfied you all are with your Samsung netbooks.
You see, tomorrow is the day I decide if I am going to pick up my NC10 or wait for some upgrades on the newer models to be released in a few weeks.
I am sure a lot of my questions have been asked and adequately replied on the FAQ and other threads here but I will be most grateful if you could advise me on the following:
1. How does one do a fresh install if the OS crashes? without a dvd, I mean.
2. Do you wish the NC10 was equiped with wifi “n”, 3G, ?
3. Is 10″ screen big enough to accomodate a complete web page? Or is scrolling involved?
4. Any and all your thoughts are welcomed
Thanks,

MemberWelcome to the site Nick
1. The built in Samsung Recovery solution enables you to return the NC10 to the “first set up” condition out of the box. This effectively gives you a fresh copy of Windows XP Home if anything goes wrong.
2. Wireless “N” in my opinion is excessive for a netbook unless you will be doing alot of media streaming or copying large files over a wireless network. If that’s the case it is possible to “upgrade” the wireless module in the NC10 (with a bit of skill and by voiding your warranty). Built in 3G would have been nice but is not a necessity in my opinion as 3g dongles are cheap and easy.
3. 10″ 1024×768 is large enough to view webpages comfortably. I very very rarely have to scroll horizontally to see the full page. However with a limitation of 768 horizontal lines there is a fair bit of vertical scrolling involved with most websites.
4. Love my NC10. No regrets.
Any more questions, just ask! Let us know what you decide.

Participant1. You press F4 at startup which boots from a hidden recovery partition.
2. My NC10 is equipped with n (and a) 😛
I upgraded the wireless card which is a fairly easy mod. As for 3G, I just tether to my phone so not really.3. Depend on the webpage, you will be scrolling vertically a lot (as usual), though I have come across few sites where I’ve needed to scroll horizontally.
EDIT: Hah beaten to it 🙂

Member1. Just want to add that you can easily create your own system snapshots for backup with the included software
2. In my oppinion 54Mbit/s is enough for daily wlan usage. No need to use any “Drafts” such as N
3. Hit F11 (on Internet Explorer) to toggle IE to Fullscreen. This actually makes a huge difference. I always do this when i jump from link to link instead of typing in a URL
4. I doubt it that Samsung will release another 10″ Netbook to soon (they will release other sizes before they restart the cycle) so all you need is a NC10 and 2GB’s of RAM
Watcha waiting for? 😉

Member2. Included WiFi is more than enough to stream Hi res video from iPlayer etc. The bottleneck is my broadband connection!
3.You get used to using the page up and down keys, it’s not a big problem imo. The trackpad also has a mouse wheel function for scrolling up and down, but I prefer page up/page down myself.February 4, 2009 at 10:36 am #182389TCMuffin

If you want to do a clean install of XP Home as supplied on the Samsung Recovery Disk without an external CD/DVD drive you can use an USB boot drive created using WinSetupFromUSB as explained in the following excellent guide:I wanted to remove the recovery partition and experiment with other OS, so I have allocated the disk space (all primary partitions) on my drive as follows:
* 50 GB as partition hd 0,0 for WinXP
* 50 GB as partition hd 0,1 for Windows 7
* 3 GB as partition hd 0,2 for linux-swap
* and the remainder (about 46 GB) as partition hd 0,3 for Ubuntu 8.10

Some vertical scrolling is inevitable and showing the web page in ‘Full Screen’ mode by pressing F11 is one way of maximising the use of screen space, but this does not allow you the full functionality of the browser.Another way to maximise the screen display by using Firefox with Ken Barbalace’s Classic Compact theme.
If you then right click on the menu bar at the top of the browser and untick ‘Bookmarks Toolbar’ you will add a bit more vertical space.
You can save even more vertical space by using small icons. This is achieved by right mouse clicking on menu bar and select “customize” or go to “View”: “Toolbars”: “Customize” then check the “use small icons” option.
Hope this helps

1. Options include using the Recovery software, setting up a bootable USB stick with OS install, and getting an external USB optical drive. I picked up an optical drive.
2. Not really. The existing WiFi works just fine for what I want to do. 3G would occasionally be nice when I’m on-the-go and can’t find a free WiFi, but data plans cost quite a bit and I just wouldn’t use it that often. (For comparison, I spend about $100 per year on a pay-as-you-go cell phone.)
3. I haven’t run into too many websites that require horizontal scrolling, and most of those have a single column for content so I just scroll that into view and ignore the ads and such. Most sites need vertical scrolling even on my main computer.
4. I love having a computer I can easily take anywhere instead of having to plan around using the big laptop. I love the NC10’s keyboard. It’d be nice to have one step higher resolution so you could use 1024×768 for games. Highly recommended.February 5, 2009 at 8:17 pm #182394Nick
