I’ve just remembered I had a similar problem installing an HP 7310 on a client’s network with most of the PCs running XP. I solved it by loading the HP CD and installing the printer’s software on each laptop. So – one last try. If you have the original CD which came with your printer install the software from this, otherwise download the software (it’s only 21.52 MB) from the HP site.
This is from memory, so may not be entirely accurate, but you should get the idea. Turn on both computers and the printer. Run the HP software which at some point will ask if the printer is a local or network printer. Click the radio button next to ‘network printer’ and the software will look for the printer and should find it and give you the choice of installing it. Allow the software to finish at which time you may have to restart your Sammy.
I recommend immediately running the HP Software Update utility. Once all of this has completed, I would also recommend removing the HP software from starting every time you start the computer. I use a really useful, free tool CCleaner to remove detritus, check the registry, remove software, and control what software starts when the computer starts.
Et voila – you, hopefully, have a printer attached to your Sammy!

Yes……really excited now……I’m sure the above method will work, because I’ve just had to add my client’s daughter’s PC to the network and it’s running XP….and when I just tried to ‘Add Printer’, I got this window too:So, I dug out the HP CD and installed the software and it’s worked !amazed
Please let me know how you get on 🙂
February 2, 2009 at 7:40 pm #181987berflesMemberI was going to reply and say that I already tried installing the disc contents to my NC10 and it still didn’t work, but I didn’t have it look for the printer or I’m not sure if it even asks, the only thing I remember is it asking me if I wanted to continue without plugging the printer in.
I’ll go try again and follow your post 🙂 Thanks.
EDIT: Nope, this is the only thing that asks me to do anything:
So close, but so far away 🙁
February 2, 2009 at 9:53 pm #181980TCMuffinMember!cry Oh no……I really thought we had it cracked….. !cry
So sorry Berfles
February 2, 2009 at 9:58 pm #181995Jonny BlondMemberthat looks like its trying to find a local printer, rather than a remote one.
lets try rewinding a bit.Have you defiantly networked the pc’s together: try sharing a folder on the machine with the printer, and make sure you can browse the folder and load a file from it, from the sammy.
please post your results.
February 2, 2009 at 10:21 pm #181988berflesMemberI don’t even know anymore, this whole thing has me messed up. Maybe they aren’t even sharing. I don’t see anything in the shared folder section on XP but it’s totally different on Vista so I don’t remember how to do it on XP.
February 2, 2009 at 11:00 pm #181996Jonny BlondMemberok. i think the problem lies in the networking. there are loads of varibles here. fire walls . correct work group names & computer names etc.
First of all re-set up the network “work group”
make sure you have simple network sharing installed on vista ( windows components )
then go to control panel, system on both machines. re type the work group name exactly the same on both pc’s and name each pc something simple. ie desktop and sammy.
make sure file sharing is on on both computers and temporally disable any 3rdparty firewall ( leave windows firewall on )
then share a file ( a picture or folder on the vista machine )
go on the sammy and go to my network places. if you cant see the file try typing \vista ( where vista is your vista machines name. it should show the computer and the file / folder. you should be able to load the file.if this works then share the printer on the vista. try the add printer on network install. if this doesn’t work try install printer manually and put the location as \vistaprinter1 where vista is the machine name and printer1 is the printer name.
if all works and printer installs and prints then turn on firewall and add to safe list.
if it doesn’t work post back with what you have done and where your upto and what happend
February 2, 2009 at 11:04 pm #181989berflesMemberI’ll try this after dinner but I did just find my NC10 on my Desktop, in Control Panel under View Computers and Devices. My desktop name and NC10 name are there and I can get to the shared files on my NC10 from the desktop and vice versa.
EDIT:Breakthrough, I can now see the printer in the Add Printer wizard, but when I try to connect I get the same message. I didn’t do anything other than navigate to the shared section and add a music folder on my desktop and see if the netbook could see it. Then I tried adding the printer and both computers show up, I clicked the desktop and the printer showed but then gave that message again about the driver.
February 2, 2009 at 11:16 pm #181972AlfiharParticipantFor situations like these I prefer to use IP addresses instead of hostnames which can fail to resolve. Anyway as it’s asking for a username/password I doubt this is the issue.
I couldn’t tell (or missed it) whether you had tried setting a password for your account on the Vista machine, if you haven’t I would try and set one. And then use it when it asks for it on the XP machine.
February 2, 2009 at 11:17 pm #181997Jonny BlondMemberyer sometime it can kick start the network sharing when you change or force view it. can you play music from the vista folder on the sammy. it could still be a firewall isue. or user privileges where you can see the computer and folders but can’t access them
February 3, 2009 at 12:01 am #181990berflesMemberI don’t understand why it would allow another Vista laptop to use the printer if it was a firewall setting though. I can view and access the shared folders fine as well.
And Alfihar, my Vista account does have a password and I tried that and get the same thing.
At least it’s seeing the workgroup and printer in the Add Printer dialog now, so I have something else to mess with.
EDIT: And here I sit.
If I go to the Printers folder on the netbook with my desktop, I can try to add a printer to it but I get a message saying I don’t have privilege to do so.
February 3, 2009 at 1:29 pm #181998Jonny BlondMemberwhere were at now i don’t thinks its the firewall any more.
are you logged in as an administrator on both pc’s?
try manually adding the printer: goto printers and add, then use manual set up ( not sure what its called in vista then type the location your self:
\MEEFHP Photosmart 7960 series
does the same driver message happen?
Oh just a thought the vista machine is using a vista driver the sammy you have appears to be using XP!?!? could be the problem have you tryed updating the hp driver and possibly downloading the xp from hp’s website.
February 4, 2009 at 2:46 am #181991berflesMemberI’m logged in as admin on both, yes,
You mean adding the printer manually on Vista while on the netbooks network? I’ve tried that and it tells me I don’t have permission to add a printer from there.
And the NC10 is using XP, Vista won’t let me install the XP driver on it.
EDIT: Actually I just did get it to install on the desktop but it still gives me this damn error.
February 4, 2009 at 11:40 am #181969MarkRMemberHi – maybe it is time for a slightly different approach.
In my home set up – although the (HP) printer is physically next to the desktop it is actually attached directly to the network (by a cable, although it could be wireless).
In the router I have reserved a specific IP address for the printer.
On each PC (Desktop and 4 laptops) I have installed the HP software which came with the printer, and during the installation process each PC has ‘discovered’ the printer on the network without any problem.
I guess one advantage of this, is that even if the desktop is powered down for some reason – then I can still print from anywhere.February 4, 2009 at 12:02 pm #181973AlfiharParticipant@MarkR
That is a good solution, and is what I do with several printers. However you do need a print server somewhere (can be inbuilt into the printer or router). So it would probably be an additional expense for berfles. The downside is that if you have a multi-function printer/scanner often the scanner won’t work, though my one (HP 3210) connected via ethernet does sometimes. As berfles only has a printer this wouldn’t be an issue though.
I dislike HP’s standalone drivers (ones on the disk or ones you download) so I never use them.

Thanks – I don’t have a print server (guess it must be built-in … I have an HP L7700) … or maybe each PC is acting as its own (remember I installed the HP software in each one). The only problem I have seen with scanner is when trying to send files to different userid’s on the same PC.
